Description
And now, for the characters celebrating their birthdays in June… we have two couples that celebrate the same day, June 22th.
The first ones made their debut in 1977, in a film directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, John Lounsbery and Art Stevens, based on a book series by Margery Sharp. Produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution, it’s the 23rd Disney animated feature film, with 2 heroic mice, members of the Rescue Aid Society, rescuing a little orphan girl who was abducted by a villainess (and her bumbling assistant and two pet crocodiles) to use her to retrieve a valuable diamond from a pirates’ cave. With the help of an albatross, and later several swamp animals, the mice would succeed at rescuing the girl. A quite successful film, it had a 1990 sequel, with the mice now rescuing an Australian boy and his eagle friend; this makes the film the first Disney animated one to have a sequel. The heroic mice often appear in small roles in various video games and are regulars in Disney’s parks.
The later debuted in 1988, directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on a 1981 novel by Gary K. Wolf; released through Disney’s Touchstone Pictures, the film portrays cartoon characters as living actors who can interact with humans while also having their own town in an area of Los Angeles. The starring rabbit is framed of a crime, and teams up with a human detective who has an old resentment against toons due to one killing his brother years ago; the rabbit’s wife, a very sexy human-shaped toon, is suspected of being involved but, as she explains, she’s not bad, just drawn that way. With techniques to combine live action and animation, the movie was praised by its humor, special effects and performances, plus making it a massive cartoon crossover that, besides Disney toons, guest-starred Warner Brothers, Universal Pictures, MGM and Fleischer/Paramount Studios’ toons. The movie’s toon stars would later appear in theatrical animated shorts, and several video games.
So, Happy Birthday to you all; and whoever is in charge of the party’s catering, remember; cheese and carrots are fine, but no dip.
