Created by Walter Lantz for Universal Pictures, this crazy bird debuted as a little panda’s co-star on November 25, 1940. The redheaded wacko would soon become the studio’s most popular toon, with his personality evolving from an insane bird with an unusually garish design to a more refined look who still enjoyed outsmarting and mocking his enemies, also going from annoying anyone who’d stand on his way to only doing it with those who antagonized him first. The woodpecker became popular enough to get his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and him and associated characters are also icons at the Universal Studios Theme Parks worldwide.

While the bird is still popular and well known in USA, appearing on video games, comics and TV shows, he’s extremely popular in Latin and South America, to the point that his theatrical cartoons are often broadcasted as TV marathons, specially in Brazil, and he even got a Live Action/CGI hybrid film theatrically released in Brazil in October 5, 2017. He’s also the official team mascot of the Honda Motorcycle Racing Team, and his trademark laughter is often referenced in other animated shows.
