Description
And now, for the characters celebrating their birthdays in November… two movies where strays have the leading roles.
The first one is loosely based on the Charles Dickens’ novel ‘Oliver Twist’; this time, however, many of the roles are played by animals. Premiering on November 18, 1988, by Walt Disney Pictures, and directed by George Scribner, the main character is a homeless kitten who joins a gang of dogs to survive in the New York streets, eventually being adopted by a lonely rich girl after rescuing her from a dangerous loan shark who was a constant threat for the dogs’ owner, a petty yet good-hearted thief. The film was a success, and has become a fan-favorite over the years.
The next guys, created and directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, debuted in an MGM movie premiering in November 17, 1989, with two stray dogs escaping from the dog pound, and the leader, a charming but unscrupulous German Shepherd, is betrayed by their former business partner, a bulldog, resulting in his death; however, being a dog grants him free entrance to Heaven, where he cheats death by stealing a golden pocket watch representing his life and winding it back; the canine rejoins his best friend, and, with the help of a little girl with the ability to talk with various animals, starts getting back on the traitorous bulldog, culminating with the German Shepherd sacrificing himself to save the kid, which, again, grants him entrance to Heaven despite his previous misdeed. The movie would prove popular enough to bring several sequels and an animated series, now with the GS and his friend acting as guardian angels on Earth.
So, Happy Birthday, Guys, and remember, if you get cake, get sure it’s not a chocolate one.
