Description One of ten whimsical illustrations from my book "The Old Testament Obituaries,"a curious collection of witty narratives based on tragic deaths in the Bible.

One detail from the old story is missing: Eglon had hyperactive bowels and took a huge dump upon being stabbed (called the dirt in most English translations), which helped Ehud cover his escape, as the guards were like "Oh, he's on the toilet as usual. Must be a really big time-consumer. Hmm, this one is unusually long. Oh my Chemosh, he's never taken this long before, do you think we should check on him and make sure there's nothing rotten in the state of Moab?" And then they broke the doors open and found the dead king lying on the floor, presumably in a pile of his own feces. And archaeologists tell us, I kid you not, that the Moabite capital where this story must have taken place, was in a city called Shittim.
