Description Learning from the Best

Breathing deeply, quickly, harshly,
Sweat and soot mixed
In a bitter scent by the fire.
Slashing, clashing, sweeping swiftly,
Dueling the day away,
Sparks fly from shining steel
As swords flash under noonday sun.
Finally falling, worn, exhausted,
Collapsing on the evening earth,
Water slides down an arid throat
As sparring partners rest.

"A good fight, that!"

And the student nods tiredly.

"You pass,"
He continues, smiling wearily.

A great smile splits
Her serious face,
Beaming bright like
Evening sunlight as the
Fire fades
And the cool shade of evening
Grants sweet reprieve
From the light to all that lives.

"Thank you",
She murmurs, struggling to stand,
To bow with feet in training-ring sand.
"I am honored to have learned
from the best."
