Description
In the turn of the century, one of the employees of the Baldwin Locomotive Works; George R. Henderson received a patent for a heavy freight locomotive on the Erie Railroad.
This steam engine in particular was the result of a need for high pulling power to tackle the ever-increasing amount of rail traffic of the future modern era.
Unfortunately for Baldwin, Mr. Henderson developed more of a imaginative mind when it came to designing the strongest steam locomotives ever built.
With an extreme 2-8-8-8-2 wheel arrangement, 160,000 Ibs of tractive effort, it was known as the Triplex.
Three of these Centipede iron horses were built in 1914 for heavy service at first, but after a coal-hauling incident, they went on as helpers operating on grueling grades
of the Susquehanna Hill until the 1920s marked their official and historic conclusion.
Only the Triplex today is immortalized by scale models for hobbies.
