I'm just a hobbiest, no commercial stuff. Final picture will be posted here on DeviantArt, FB, 500px and my personal webpage

This is fantastic. You're nailing the sculpt, the details, and the textures/render look amazing. Killing it! I may be asking for a tutorial from you soon. no joke.

I'd love to get my hands on Mari. It's quite expensive tho. But KeyShot is killing it for me right now. I'm happy to answer any questions if you have any. Shoot me a note anytime. As soon as I get a minute, I may note you about how you did the maps and all that for the textures. It's one thing I don't really do yet.

Sounds good to me ! Glad to connect anytime.
And, Yes! Keyshot has been fantastic! I'm tempted to take my final Vray scene in 3ds Max and send it to Keyshot, see how that renders, etc.
I've never been a big fan of doing UV's... , always wishing PTEX would 'suddenly' become the new normal (and not be difficult to work with ).
There are a couple of 'non-UV' methods out there (which look-like 'blended box' methods + photobashing), -from what I've seen used for fast concepting work.
For my recent work I'll use UV Master, just to have some ok/decent UV space to work on.
Then I'll send everything to MARI and do a lot of projection painting (rotate model to a good spot > texture is 'on top' of the mesh > paint the texture through to the model (where it sits in the frame buffer) > Bake the texture down onto the mesh / project it > rotate model, find a good spot, etc. > paint the texture through, etc. (repeat). <--There is a TON you can do in MARI (it's like Photoshop on roids ).
Then I'll export out all of the maps/textures from MARI > import the meshes & maps into 3ds Max > render in Vray.
A lot of people LUV Substance Painter, which I completely understand (because Substance Painter is incredible!). <--that might be considered competition with MARI, but I think both are excellent, & I'm glad to use both (josh pours all of his money out the window ).
Mudbox seemed to be very promising for being able to do the 'direct' painting of textures onto the model (the option of not having to do 'projection painting'), unfortunately Mudbox seems to be dying... From what I can tell, Mudbox is going into Maya (which, I hope, works out well). I would have no problem going to Maya & using Vray in Maya for the final rendering, ...just that I'd have to purchase Vray for Maya . Good thing all of these CG programs are so inexpensive, Hahahahahahaha!! NOT .
