Part four of my concept art. I'll be drawing Lloyd next, then Jay. Since Jay and Cole have pretty much the same costume, I have to do something in between to break up the continuity. After Jay I'll do Garmadon, then Sensei.Related content

This isn't meant to be racist, but why does everyone assume Cole is black? He might be Asian, Latino, or even White, but everyone immediately assumes he's black.

Not everyone draws him as black. I know Erraday doesn't, as well as a few others. But I do it because all the Lego characters I draw are part of my Legoverse, including Ninjago. Which means that there is no African, Asian, Latino, Caucasian, etc. To me, Cole is Rastan/Verterran mixed, Rastans being dark skinned. Also in the Legoverse, the Original Elemental Master of Earth was a Rastan, and Cole is a descendant of her. It's also why I draw Kai, a Solarian, with semi dark skin. It's just part of the worldbuilding.

I really love how you gave him blue eyes. I wouldn't have thought of it. It's a nice touch and really makes this drawing stand out. All the fan art you ever see of Cole his eyes are either green or brown. I like that you didn't stick to that! (Also the stubble was a great touch too. Still cleaning up blood on the floor from that one.)

Thank you. In my timeline, Cole's natural skin color is lighter than shown here, but exposure to the sun for a long time has left him super tan. And also, since this doesn't take place in our universe, in my timeline Cole's ancestry can be traced back to a region called Middle Rowstad where the general ethnicity is black haired, blue eyed, and dark skinned. This is all headcanon, of course.

My reasoning behind his having blue eyes was that the blue eyes/ black hair is my favorite combo, which is why I also did it for Nya (which makes since, because water and all). I also didn't want to make their eye colors match their element. For example, there's a lot of art out there of Kai with red eyes, which is not a natural eye color. I've also seen Jay with blue eyes. I just wanted to break away from all that. So I didn't give Cole the brown eyes that everyone expects of him. Another reason is that Cole is not naturally dark skinned, but is extremely tan from being outdoors for so long. In my thing, he would naturally be about the same skin color as Nya. But I see what you mean.

Thanks! To me the ninja are in their late teens/early twenties, so it would make sense for them to have facial hair.

I like how Cole's dark and scruffy, the choice to alter the ninjas' ethnicities is really cool.

I think all these designs are awesome, with the only minor nitpick being that the color of the Zukin brown is like, eerily similar to his skin tone, and so it's kinda distracting, since there's no real way to differentiate in a really easy fashion.
It's really only an issue on the lower arms.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I tried to stay as true to the minifigure as possible, and tried to match the same color as the strap. But I didnt realize that Cole's skin color matched the color of the gauntlets until I had already done Kai. It's not a problem with the minifigure, you know, since all non licensed minifigures have yellow skin.
