This set was taken from 2 separate photoshoots. Rob was a fantastic model and I'm hoping to work with him again.

Hmm, I can see why the commenter below mentioned the tattoos being quite prominent, but then they are well and truly part and parcel of who he is. I kinda like them myself, especially in this shot where they actually compliment and sorta balance some of the shading in the background. Provides an interesting form of symmetry to the pic.

Plus the guy is hot as hell, which helps

I agree, the tattoo is very much part of him and really does help separate him from his natural surrounding. And yes he is hot as hell haha.

Good looking model. It's unfortunate that, for me at least, the tatt is such a distraction from his physical appearance. This is why I'm not a tatt person. Especially for male models. Such a shame.

I love shooting all sorts of looks. Tattoos I think are something that creates uniqueness in a model and I chose this model not only based on his beautiful eyes but also on the tattoo. He is not a pro fashion model so I dont feel this hinders him or his look in any way. Different strokes for different folks i guess.

Hey Josh-
Yes, I did catch his eyes as well but, only after, the distraction of the tatt. When a uniqueness distracts from the beauty and appearance of the model as a whole, that creates a problem. It doesn't matter if they are a pro model or not. A distraction is a distraction or deterrent, if you will.
Now, if you were doing shoots for tatt mags or a tatt artist, then he'd be perfect. But again, for me personally, it's not something I want to see. I've always felt that and will continue to feel that way. Let me be a little more specific. When I mean tatts, I mean these huge pieces like he has. Not talking like a smaller one on the arm or what have you. It's these full sleeves or legs and/or a good portion of the body.Of course, I guess that's what make-up is for also. To cover up for on camera be it movie film or photography.Again, before anyone gets angry with me for stating my feelings, it is just MY opinion and thoughts. I don't want distractions from the main focus of a photo and that's me and not going to apologize for how I feel. Each photographer is certainly entitled to how she/he works and feels about certain subjects. I just happen to have two HUGE issues with male models. Tatts and those who shave off leg and chest/ab fuzz-hair which is, a whole subject entirely.

Very much with you and Josh on that whole 'cult of shaving' thing that many guys seem to be into. 'Tis a sad thing. While I'm not into the whole shaggy bigfoot look, natural body-hair on a guy can be a thing of beauty, after all I like men, not boys

Yah..kinda ticks me off in a way. Also as a photographer, it's a nightmare when you have a male model who shaves and then you have razor burn, red bumps or dark bumps and it gives a photo a VERY undesirable look and frankly, I refuse to spend a hour or more on a photo removing such nonsense on photoshop when it could have and should have been avoided to begin with. I tell all my male models PLEASE...do NOT shave off any chest/ab fuzz or hair including happy trail AND legs. Besides,I like my hairy legs and happy trails too much But yah, wish guys would just leave things natural looking. Like you, no need for Sasquatch but...lol..some guys especially have that extra "hotness" to them when they have the perfect upper body hair/fuzz.
Ok...off my soapbox...lol

I guess thats what makes it art. Everyone has a different interpretation of it. Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. I am not a huge tattoo freak... but i appreciate art in all forms including body art no matter the size. This piece was important to the model and as an artist i am proud to represent the model rather than cover it up as if it were an imperfection.

I choose to shoot a variety of models; ages, races, from all walks of life that enjoy many different styles. If i shot only those I found personally compelling and whose style's i preferred than im guessing my work would all start to look the same. It is in their unique attributes that I am able to see beauty in so many different ways.

I also from a personal stand point hate when guys shave any part of their bodies. I find body hair on guys to be beautiful, however i have shot many models who prefer to shave it. This is their choice and my role as a photographer is simply to work with the subject as they are. I understand plenty the ability to manipulate the model as well as the photo afterwards to complete my works, however i appreciate certain subtleties such as tattoos and body hair (or lack of) that make people individuals and respect them enough to display them as is.

Thanks for sharing your opinion and I hope you dont take any offense to mine.

Best,

Josh
