Description

Sure everybody who saw the reference for Anderson I used for this said that my painting is so far from the mark. But don’t you think that dear Phillip as *a character* should have big, teary stalker eyes, even if Jonathan Aris technically speaking doesn’t?

What the heck I’m even rambling, this didn’t even fit the scanner in one piece, I spent like 2 hours trying to piece it together like Dr. Frankenstein.

Seriously though, every freaking time ever that I've made portraits I at first intend them to be realistic, but then I get about 101 better ideas along the way xD

What would you do yourself, the eyes just pleased me so much that I didn't have heart to render them any smaller, even if that had increased the likeness.

I absolutely love this rendition of Anderson. It suits his character, I think.

Aw, thank you! I though this style suits the inner characteristics of Anderson, but some may disagree and have disagreed. Nice to hear it still interests anyhowˆˆ

this is amazing.  i love his face and eyes and the stylization.  really captures the mood and makes me think of desperation.  probably the first time I started caring for Anderson was much later in the show.  and actually I don't even remember this part that well.

I have a tendency to fall in love with the most obscure things there are. I don't even know what is attractive to me in Anderson, I just look at his fuzzy face and know he's my boy xD

XD  yes that can really suck.  the small fandom blues.
hahah you know I thought that Anderson was objectively cute, good looking when I first saw him, but his unappealing personality made him ugly to me.  However, since he's been changing and evolving as a character, he's now attractive again.  and god, how can I not fall in love with such a sad and harried soul?
hehehe yes the scruffiness looks great on him, and strange at the same time.  Like, he's not the kind of guy normally to look in any way out of control.  awesome when facial hair can be used symbolically.

On hindsight, I'd say, that Anderson's get-go personality wasn't even that mean or cruel considering what a dick Sherlock actually is. I mean, I'd be fucking pissed too if some annoying fucktard came to my workplace to mess with me and my life all the time too xD But yeah, I also got into liking him mostly after season 3. Something about his mental breakdown just spoke to me.

that is a good point.  it's not terribly fair to judge someone simply based on how they react to others.  esp when those others clearly try to get a rise out of him.  I would just say he doesn't exactly react in a way that makes himself look good.  His female partner was far worse, which is unfortunate, if only because of how pathetically misogynist some fans became in reaction.  The sexist fans can fuck themselves, I am not making any excuses for them, but I do place accountability on the writers as well for that.  Making one of the few fucking women in the show beastly.  shame on them.

oh for sure. it's really cool how empathy can work like that, making us care deeply for admittedly fictional characters  but in a way they are real.  they are the projections of the personalities, thoughts, desires, histories, etc of the real people who create them.  so yea, totally powerful to see a character hit rock bottom, and we are always interested to see if they get better after that trauma.

Oh yes! Donovan is called a bitch for basically just being a rational police doing their work - and Sherlock is needlessly cruel with her! Urgh, I wouldn't be half as tacktful as Donovan even if I tried. Anderson might be assholish even without reasonable excuses, but Donovan doesn't deserve being a bitch. then again, BBC!Sherlock on hindsight hasn't been terribly good with any of their female characters, not really. Though I like Molly A LOT but like... seriously, a Sherlock-fangirl, whose main characteristic is just that she's thirsty for Sherlock? Yeaaaah. Violent Molly/Jim fics I approve of though.

I'm not sure if they made Anderson's mental breakdown as a legit story telling device, or just a fucking sneaky way to laugh at fandom that creates wild theories, but I still end up enjoying his bit. I dunno. I blame the beard, I love beards.

well that's the thing, though because she's a woman daring to be angry and argue with a man, that makes her the target of all that hate.  the way the public views and treats and hates on or loves popular characters like that really says a lot about society.  for fuck's sake, so many people were dog piling Skyler White, and why?  because she dared to go against her husband, the fucking drug dealer???  shit like this makes me froth at the mouth with hatred for people lmao.  god.  sometimes characters get hate, and that's fine.  it's when the underlying motives are clearly sexist/racist or whatever, that shit angers me.

ohhhh Molly xD  I adore her so much.  yeah, at first it was uncomfortable for me.  but you know, I really really appreciated that Christmas episode where she finally walks out after he insults her for the millionth time.  she's kinda like a case study for me; she portrays what it's like to be crushing hard on someone, and wanting so bad for them to notice and admire you, even when they are clearly abusive.  it's almost worth everything previous, to build up to that moment when finally the victimized woman gets fed up and leaves the abusive dude in the cold.  and no one there thought Sherlock was right for what he did.  I haven't watched any Sherlock in forever, but I'm think I remember him looking obviously regretful, feeling bad for it (that alone shoots down his pet theory of being a sociopath--I still think he tells people, even himself, that as a defense mechanism.  don't have to be polite or bond with people if you're a "sociopath".

god but of course >:]  I need more Jim/Molly in my life.  I once did an rp that took Molly and Jim to the next level: Molly, after being kidnapped and messed with, eventually escapes and then starts taking over Jim's empire.  it took a loooooong time to get to that point, but damn did it ever seem plausible xD

yeah I don't trust the writers of this show.  Moffat's a fuck and Gatiss isn't totally innocent, either.  It's like I have to take the show itself iwth a grain of salt.  i love 90% of it very much, and want to grit my teeth at the remaining 10%.

Season 3 is worlds ahead of the first two seasons.  It feels like a totally different show.  Mary is fucking AWEsome I godamn love her.  so glad for her.  And her being in the picture doesn't mean John and Sherlock can't still do their thing on the side.  and it's great when the three of them are cohorts together.  i haven't finished season 3 yet, actually.  i need to.

beeeeards yes indeed!  i'm starting to appreciate them, too.  i've always been like uncomfortable with it, not sure why.  I feel like mustaches esp. hide so much of the face, the mouth especially.  maybe that's what it is.  if I can still see the face very well, then I'm more ok with it.  and every now and then, some special someone can rock a beard so dope, even I love them better with it.  Jack Sparrow and Barbossa, for example.  those fine bastards are like 80% dirty, tangled hair anyway

Well, I guess it's easy to fall in hating Donovan mostly cos she doesn't get interesting plotpoints, she's not given sympathetic backstory, something for a viewer to latch on. Where as Anderson gets a whole bucket load of that, it's easy to consider him as a lil baby after writers give all the reason to pull out your emotions. That's kinda the thing with some writers and women as characters, they don't give them enough story to be even interested. And then some other fans in the fandom get pissed as fuck for all other fans forgetting all the female characters in favor of males - but shouldn't you be angry at writers, who don't give anything interesting be excited about? Give me backstory, give me heartwreching situations, pull my strings, do something! Just having women as characters isn't enough, if they're not doing anything!

I have mixed feeling about Moffat especially - well, naturally, since he's the main showrunner on current Doctor Who as well and so on. I'm not as negative as some of the most vocal haters, but I'm not praising him to the heavens either. I've seen him write brilliantly. He's superb at set up. He creates a better mystery than resolves one (seen in the absolutely fantastic clifthangers, but more than a little underwhelming results) He need to take more input from other writers, I think he has too much power at the moment to decide on every detail. He kinda needs guindace on what's actually something that can be pulled off - especially on Doctor Who he's obsessed with making HUGE spectacles, when that's really not something Doctor Who particularly needs. I mean, certain epicness is all good, but trying to one up yourself in EVERY episode is just getting ridiculous. Same goes with Sherlock I think.

I'm like a beard, mustache and body hair person up to eleven, I just dig hairy-dude aesthetics. I don't even know why, but I just dig my men as kinda old, soft and hairy like most of the time xD Though, I must say, that too much testosterone is too much, if guy is super hairy and buff I'd most like him dressed sweetly and cutely and feminine xD Oh god, I remember like years back I said to you, that I don't really dig men in traditionally femme clothing that much, but that was total bullshit, I'm so into all that shit xDD Well, the main kick for me is sweetness and cuteness and stuff like that.

This is really quite excellent! Very expressive, I find it captures Anderson perfectly. I actually just re-watched "The Empy Hearse" after seeing Jonathan Aris is "The Game". I'd never seen the actor in a substantial role before, but his performance as Alan Montag was heartrending.

Series 3 made me wish to know more of the interior workings of Anderson. Both hilarious and tragic. I hope he returns in the upcoming special. . .

Thank you for sharing your work!

Thank you! I really like Jonathan Aris, though I have seen only little of his work... he need some bigger roles I think, but he's lovely nevertheless.

I've always thought that Anderson is more like canon!Lestrade than the Lestrade in BBC-series. He fits the canon characteristics... minus going absolutely crazy, but well xD

I may have pointed this out before, but that thing that you do with making colours look amazing? It still looks very amazing.
Also who cares whether it looks like the actor, it's a portrait of the character, isn't it? Surely communicating the impression and personality of the character is more important than getting the exact features of the the actor down.

jossujb In reply to isbergoe [2014-03-13 23:34:42 +0000 UTC]

I've just practiced way lot, after making enough eyesores one generally speaking starts to pick up what kind of colors could possibly go together. Though, I admit that I might always had a little bit eye for colors. Still have needed a lot of practice, nothing comes for free xD

I'm glad you get the difference in drawing a character than an actor. Actor just loand their likeness to a character, but characters have their own qualities^^ I so certain that a real-life Anderson would have the most moist and staring eyes ever... like a Tarsier or something xDDDD
