Description Some could think it's unnecessary to write this (and I would think that too) but due to the amount of downloads this one got and the fact that there're just 3 colorists that has credited me for the Flats I would emphasize:

I wish they made comics like this with just one or two toned coloring like in manga but detailed pencil work.

well I'm not a manga fan, in fact I can't remember to have read any manga but I guess you mean like the cellshading they use on most anime shows, that's a style that could like to many people I guess but just flats (as you see here) I think it would be kind of too lazy, I mean old comics used to be this way but that was mostly because technical issues and same for anime I think they do it that way because it would be a lot of work to use a full coloring style (without using 3d models). I prefer for comics a coloring style with gradients and that and semi realistic look (not too reallistic however) but sure in some occasions a 'flat-looking' coloring style could work for some single pieces like the one it's on the daily deviations now [link] but, a whole comic made that way? mmm... I don't think I would like it (of course it would also depends on the script).

thanks I don't pay much attention to that and by context I'm not sure if been there (or how you get there) is necessarily a good thing. I'm starting to think that most people are lost and just ended up here like the wind was blowing in this direction or so Also I can't 'accept' that this flats has 7000 views now and *devgear 's inks only 1000. And do you want to know the "sad" part of? next time if I submit some linework or coloring of my own in the best case I would be getting like 200 views or so, it's not like I care much about that in the end but it's makes you think...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

devgear In reply to jotazombie [2013-05-07 03:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Lol, too true my friend! Very awesome to get the views for sure tho

10k now, I don't know why at least half of them (or even 1/3) don't hit the thumbs to check your works when those are the real art and this is just a mere pratical file to save some colorist's time.

glad to help in that matter too may be next time I would add a sort of explanation about flats on the deviation's description.

Yea, that might help. I guess there are lots of people that don't know what they are good for.

jotazombie In reply to NekoNinja13 [2013-05-06 20:34:37 +0000 UTC]

well to be honest I don't know the character and I only see the original colored cover after I did the flats, so I was picking kind of random colors for the flats. Since I do these flats just to save other's time and not for coloring my self (so most probably each colorist would be making their own color choice) I don't pay much attention to the color scheme I go just by instinct I think.

I'm copy/pasting what I wrote to another person:

thanks for the comment, but it seems you don't know what this really is. This is just flats, what you see is just a 'preview' image the real thing is on the downloable file. The flatting work is what many colorists (or their assitants) do as a preparation step before start the real coloring work, this is more a mechanical/technical work than artistic the point is saparete the areas with different colors so later the colorist can select those separated (e.g. the skin) and work on them without messing the other parts, this is just to prepare the piece to start the real work. What I try to do with these kind of files is save some colorist's time so they can jump right to the coloring job, mainly to help the guys that are practicing coloring to learn or improve their skills. And of course also the files could work as a kind of sample of my work as flatter.

Hope now you can understand what this really is btw the flats (colors) are the same on both sides the difference it's only that the one in the right had the lineart layer hidden to let colorists see how the flats was made.

interesting how complicated the process is sounds like you've gone to school for this. i can honestly barley follow but thanks for trying to explain

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jotazombie In reply to albinoskittles [2013-05-07 18:13:02 +0000 UTC]

it's not much complicated really just by know a couple basic points about flats and something about Photoshop is pretty easy but it could be time consuming and that's why comic colorists have assistants for these things.

first of all I hope you can read english and now a friendly advice, I'm cool with people feeling proud of their culture and therefore their language too (in fact I even was part of a sort of small "crusade" that tried to make dA a more multi-cultural site in the language matters) but on a rational thought I've to think that when you (genarally speaking) write a message to someone is (or should be) because you want to make a sort of communication (even if you don't expect an answer) so it would be smart and considered if you write the message in a language that could be understood by the other person other way it could be even rude. Sure I can take google translator or some other online translator but I don't trust on those things and anyway for what I got from those I've to think that may be you didn't get what this work really is, in that case I don't have problems to explain you but you will've to write in english (or spanish).
