Thank you for the kind review. Β Actually that was my first pastel drawing, hence the name "New Dawn".

Yes it was my first pastel, but not my first drawing. Β This was hard for me since I was not familiar with "color". Β The pastel that followed that one was "The Garden Path" and then "City Girls". Β I have enjoyed color.
By the way, is your avatar new? Β I just didn't remember seeing it. Β Looks great.

Thank you. She has modeled for me on numerous times and loves having her picture taken. This is just one drawing I have done of her.

Thank you for thinking of me and selecting one of my pieces. You put together a great collection. Great job! I know my subject will be pleased to know you selected her image too.

Have a great day.

And thank you for the selection of New Dawn. She is a friend that was nice enough to pose for me. This is my first completed pastel drawing. I have done about three more since then. I wish I could find a good teaching DVD on the subject.

Well, good luck trying to find a DVD, a book, or a class on pastels. Everything I have learned I have taught myself. I was lucky enough to take a workshop a few weeks back with Robert Carsten, a pastellist who lives in New England. I know he travels around teaching a lot, so google him to see where he is next and who knows. I have also been lucky enough to find a 3credit course in pastels given at a (not so) local college, and though it is a beginner class, it's the only one I could find. You also might try to get involved with your local pastel societies, they do workshops and stuff.
stay in touch, I'd love to see how things go for you, and will gladly pass along any tips I get!
Lisa

I know what you mean. I have seen some ads for pastel DVDs, but I was not too impressed with the artist's work, so why learn from them. But, I have seen ads for VHS tapes on pastel artist's work that I did like, but who has one of those players these days?
I believe would learn better from a good instructional DVD. I could go with that at my own pace and watch it over and over - and pause when necessary.
I did begin a new piece (small) this past week just for practice. I'm not certain if I will post it or not.

Now if you go to my gallery and look at "Smile In Red", you can also see the work in progress on the one picture. For me I need to "see" what a person does, know which colors, how they blend, etc. That is why a DVD would work for me. But, I hate to see "instructional" videos that leave out many steps and expect you to figure those out for yourself.

Wow - incredibly realistic, beautiful, warm colours, and you did the hair amazingly well. I'm surprised you don't pastel daily, you're an expert with the medium!

Thank you. I was pleased at how it turned out. But, I was like a pig on roller skates while selecting the color. It was my first pastel piece.

Thank you Nikki. I would love to do more pastels too (I do have plenty of pastels though), but I don't know color that well and this makes it hard for me. I'm still learning and have a long way to go.
Hey, don't spend too much time with me, you have a lot more messages to read (ha!).

I am a member of about three groups and I get about 200 images per week. Too bad we all don't have more time just to sit back and look at everything every day. There are so many great artists on this site.

Wonderful first effort! She has a convincing fleshiness, like a peach. The hair is a cascade of light and texture. You have great control, truly.
