I generally leave them the same size as the original background image, though I do try to crop them to fit my monitor aspect ratios unless it's trimming something I want to keep.
Keeping the size up also forces me to pay more attention to details. It's so much easier to fake in a lot of things when the image is small.

Thanks, it was really fortunate to find the train stock who's camera POV and sunlight matched so well with the pic of Melanie. It was also somewhat logical that she'd have to get up as the train approached the bridge.
