Description Kind of the sequel to the last image I posted, "Threshold". Fons et Origo is Latin for "Source and Origin of..." In this case, the explorers are returning to their home planet of Demeter more than 15 years after the Ambus asteroid impact. Their mission is to find and re-activate the subterranean machine dubbed "The Corridor".

I created the landscape and terrains in Vue;
M4 models and Xurge3d.com Viper suit composed in Poser;
Structures were created in Groboto;
Anura ship created by
Rendered in Vue with minor post work in Photoshop.

If you look really, really close, the other four characters are also in this scene. Can you find them?

This is my first image of 2011! I hope you will like... Many more to come!

Incredible! Were the clouds/misty-puffs rendered in Vue or added in postwork? Either way, the effect is stunning! Love it!!

Thank you very much! The clouds were rendered in Vue. I was going to add them in Photoshop, but decided to be lazy and let Vue do the work.

I really like it when you create these vast epic images. You can really see the atmosphere and layout right through your eyes. hehe This looks so cool! Love the soft evening light and how your character is watching as the crew from the Anura ship are beginning to explore. At least I think those tiny little spec's are the crew?? hehe Does Vue render those characters the same as the character that is so close? Or does it understand and just quickly render them? Just curious. Bjorn's ship looks so awesome with that white light on the landing deck. I like your structure in front of the character in the foreground. It looks cool and seems to be something you could actually run across in RW terms. hehe Beautiful work Ryan!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like! Yeah, I was in the mood for a landscape scene, though I didn't intend on this going the way it did. I was just doodling... and then the idea smacked me upside the head. Yes, those tiny specs are the crew. lol I believe in this sense, with the camera pulled far away from those figures, Vue just treats them as little specs and doesn't worry about the details. But I can (and did, to get the placement) zoom in on them in the scene (not in the final of course) and the details convey.

Kachinadoll In reply to jrmalone [2011-01-02 20:40:26 +0000 UTC]

Your most welcome. It's so fun when a really cool image evolves from a doodle. Those are usually the best and most creative images I'm thinking. So Vue does treat them as specks. haha Good on the render time so that's a plus. It's nice that you can zoom in for the placement as well. One of these days I need to give Vue a try. I just suck at creating landscapes. la la la

jrmalone In reply to Kachinadoll [2011-01-03 01:50:54 +0000 UTC]

Definitely give it a try sometime. They have the free learning editions, but they stamp that watermark on the renders. But it'll give you an idea of what it can do before you plunk down money on it. And don't think of it as just a landscape renderer - you can do anything with it. I guess it's what you're comfie with. If you ever decide to take the plunge, I'll help.

Kachinadoll In reply to jrmalone [2011-01-03 17:31:06 +0000 UTC]

Sounds good! I would like to at least give it a try. You do use it for everything, even your character rendering. That's true. I like that. Thank you! When I give it a spin, I will most likely have questions. ....um, where is the render button?? haha then your going to want to do this hehe

Wow this is absolutely fabulous. The terrain is just amazing! As for the other characters, there appears to be 3-4 humanoids down by the ships light. My eye sight isn't the greatest but that's what I see. Gorgeous job on the landscape and the structure, its so detailed and interesting!

jrmalone In reply to VeeSwan [2011-01-01 21:01:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Vee! Yeah, one of the characters on the ground is out of the light so a bit harder to see. This scene started out as just a doodle with some terrains and then it sparked a whole scene idea. I'm making a "before" image now when things were pristine and "normal", before the disaster. We'll see...

VeeSwan In reply to jrmalone [2011-01-01 21:07:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh that should be completely awesome. I can't wait to see it. I'm still having trouble getting Vue 6 and 8 to cooperate with Win 7, I've tried reinstalling it twice now, hopefully this time I can get it to function. Every time I get a popup tech report to send in, I tell them, their software is bullshit, and they suck monkey balls for not fixing the previous versions and coming out with new ones. LOL, I bet they get a lot of that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jrmalone In reply to VeeSwan [2011-01-02 14:32:49 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Tell 'em!!! (They conveniently took those reports away in 9 - hmmm, wonder why...) Yeah, give it up for Vue 6. I had mondo issues with it in Vista, so I can imagine it would be worse for Win 7. But Vue 8 should be fine. I'm sure e-on's response will be the cookie-cutter "Make sure you run it as Administrator" blah blah. It's a bullshit response and doesn't have to be run in admin. Sorry you're having so many issues. I'll try to help if I can.

Come to think of it, I do have a question about the vid card, before I was re-installing Vue 6, There was a message that stated my video card didn't support a few of the components or something of that nature, are there any video settings that need to be addressed? Because I have a relatively new vid card. And course now I have also re-installed Vue 8 and I think there is some setting problem there as well because I am getting rectangular artifacts across the entire interface. Let me know if you have any ideas.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jrmalone In reply to VeeSwan [2011-01-03 03:23:28 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, didn't think about the vid card being the culprit. Could definitely be the issue.

Try this in Vue:
File > Options...
Under the "Display Options" tab, I believe the default for the "3D view display quality" is bubbled for "OpenGL 2.1 (shader 4)". If it is, select the next one for "OpenGL (fixed hardware pipeline)". And vice verse if one or the other is set.

Also, check the "Max usable video memory". You may need to try different options to see if that clears things up. Otherwise you may need to open a dreaded ticket with e-on and list your video board manufacturer so they can cross-reference to make sure it's compatible.

BTW - what video card do you have? Most Invidia boards work well. I have a GeForce 9800 GT and knock on wood have never had any issues. Somewhere in the Vue world I remember seeing a list of boards that are supported. There may be an updated driver for yours too, but you may have already tried that.

Let me know if this helps. If not, we'll keep pluggin' along until you're fixed!

jrmalone In reply to VeeSwan [2011-01-03 18:36:17 +0000 UTC]

Cool! Yeah, I thought Vue would complain right off the bat if the card was incompatible - and I know for a fact that it supports most all of the GeForce line. It just occurred to me that BjΓΆrn also had an issue with reloading his Vue on his new computer - I think his just flat didn't work at all. Seems to me it was a bad driver somewhere, but I could be mistaken. I'll shoot him a note and see what he comes back with...

Thank you so much Kane! Yes, add it to the growing list of stories in the works. lol Just for giggles, I was thinking of making a "before" image of this same scene, showing what it looked like in its prime before the asteroid impact cleaned the slate. We'll see...

LINCARD1000 In reply to jrmalone [2011-01-01 15:03:31 +0000 UTC]

hehehe... one positive thing is that you both will never face the situation of having nothing to write about! Actually a before/after diptych would look kinda neat. Or to challenge yourself, you could do a pic with a viewpoint from space of the asteroid hitting the planet's surface? That would be a challenge for you

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jrmalone In reply to LINCARD1000 [2011-01-02 14:44:08 +0000 UTC]

Oy, I've tried. Not in an image, though. Actually in an animation, but just couldn't get it right, so I conveniently drifted behind the planet as the asteroid hit on the other side and you can see a brilliant flash. hehe I don't have those cool Hollywood resources for the animations just yet. Just something I dabble in with Vue from time to time (I love it, but you have to have the patience of watching paint dry). But yeah, it would be an awesome challenge. I'll add it to my list!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LINCARD1000 In reply to jrmalone [2011-01-03 15:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the technicalities of effectively animating a scene like that would be quite challenging. Hell, even a still-pic would not be the easiest thing to draw.

Thanks Kenneth! There was a lot more landscape that what can be seen here - the clouds and atmo obscured them. I had an idea yesterday to make a "Before" image of this terrain, before everything went to Hell in a handbasket for the world. We'll see...

And LOL! Yay! You found them! They're actually in proportion to the ship and environment, so I almost didn't include them. But to Vue, they were just specks of dust to render.
