Description This was a class piece I did early this year that I had fun doing with mostly complimentary colors of oranges and blues inspired by a European animated movie called, Nocturne. I can't remember the exact purpose of this project, but I do recall the course required a person to pick a phrase out of the list of words mentioned in the professor's sheet to create an illustration. Mine was 'Sea of Clouds'. This led me to create Kaiko, the flying fish soaring through a 'sea of clouds'. Kaiko is a creature mixed of an array of fish, bird, and water mammal such as an orca, shark, gold fish, flying fish, and the cockatiel parrot. The fish's name means, Sea Child. I chose the reading of Kaiko instead of Umiko, which people may misread on its name tag, which has duel pronunciation in kanji like most do. Why? Umiko sounded too girly and possibly common since Umi is a well known girl name, where as the sharp strike of the word 'Kai' with the soft 'Ko' felt more pleasing on my lips. It also had a tomboy ring to it since Kai is a boy name, with the softness of Ko which is a girl ending for names. I could be wrong, but at the very least, I liked the sound. For those who know about the popularity of Japanese names, do correct me if I am wrong. I love the concept of making names and learning languages. It's really fascinating!

The illustration is great of course, and I really love the amount of thought you put into your characters. Brilliant.

Thank you very much! It's thoughtful of you to say. It's always nice to know that a person doesn't just appreciate the final completion of a work, but the process that was made to get there like a story. I always fancied that part in artists' work rather than the finish though I still drool at the final part too, double in fact. Lol. Whoops! I rambled. Sorry! But yes! Thank you once again for the thoughtful words! I glad you enjoyed Kaiko as much as I enjoyed illustrating the gal. It'd be nice to have a creature like her, having a buddy to soar through the clouds free of worry-- At least for a little while; might not be too good to literally have your head in the clouds for too long. ^__^ :chuckle:

Beautiful illustration. It almost demands a story to be told about it, and more illustrations to go along with it. It is rare that a single picture makes my mind wander off to wonder what happens next.

Thank you for the kind and rather thoughtful comment. As a illustrator, I'm proud to hear that a piece I've done feels set between a portion of a story that may alludes to more, which brings a reader in to it. It's the best comment I've heard in a while. ^_^ Thank you again. I do hope what imaginations that transpire in your thoughts have taken you to wonderful and daring places rather than nightmares-- Than again, I suppose nightmares are what bring about adventure to a better and lighter end, no? Creativity is such a amazing thing. ^_^ Perhaps one day I may do something about this piece as a series, if I have time. It simply never occurred to me to press on with this piece.

Very pretty illustration. A nice glimpse into another place, another time.

Nice job.

Pieces for classes always seem to help inspire us in new directions sometimes, no?

Thank you for your thoughtful insight. I'm glad you like the illustration enough to think about it for a minute.

Yes, courses do let one be more bold, experimental, and enlightened. Something that isn't as forgivable in the commercial field. T_T Yay for school!^_^

Illustration requires some thought sometimes, don't it?

It really looks like something to me that could go into a children's book as a illustration or perhaps be concept art for an anime. Very inspiring in that sort of thing.

Well your welcome!

Yes, school is awesome.
