I've been able to get some pretty photographic like effects with pencil but struggle with doing the same in watercolor. Watercolor is much more difficult to control and more unforgiving. Watercolor is, however, much faster, so that alone is a huge plus. I did come much closer to something photographic with this.I've also struggled with trying to get a smooth color with watercolor, but I think I've figured it out. The background came out much smoother than anything else I've done.

Watercolour advice: do lots of little practices where you don't care much how it comes out, and then you'll quickly learn to take advantage of the weird things it does.
