Description Big and noisy, the Pileated Woodpecker is really a treat to view. I spotted this male in Banff National Park in Alberta. I really wasn't expecting this species up there, but I was thrilled! He and his partner were absolutely demolishing a dead tree to find food for their three chicks.

Great shot, I chased 2 of these through the woods for 45 minutes last week and couldn't sneak close enough for a clear shot... oh well, at least I know where they are hanging out.

Wonderful shot. I only know of one reliable place to spot them in this area, and I've been trying to get a decent photo for over a year, but they always fly away!

It is impressive to view. There are also several other big woodpecker species in Central/South America that I have to go and try to see someday!

this is great!!

Thanks so much! Image Stabilization really, really helps in situations like this...enabling me to drop to 1/100 and still obtain sharp images (some are blurry too). Since it's digital, I don't hold back when shooting and a few will almost always have the critical sharpness that is my aim.

thanks mate. I guess my mistake was reserving the IS for slower shutter speeds. I will remember to always use it at speeds slower than the lens's focal range.

By the way, your gallery is fantastic, it makes me wanna give up everything and travel and see what you have seen!

Amazing! I hear them all the time in the summer but never get to see them up close- at least not for long. Beautiful colors, too.

Wonderful shot. I had a pair show up in my yard last spring. They were so busy chasing each other around that I managed to get a couple of decent shots.
My husband often sees them in our back pasture and we keep track of sightings.

It sure does bring back thoughts of the Ivory-billed...I've been on searches for that bird in the panhandle of Florida. It didn't dare show itself while myself and two other photographers were ready with an arsenal of cameras and lenses. Maybe next time!

There's said to be some on Cuba. Back in the late '80s,
I designed an applique sweatshirt with an Ivory-billed on it,
for Bill Oddie, a friend & Wildlife TV presenter. It had an "Extinct" badge on it.
He was going to the annual dinner of the International Council for Bird Preservation ICBP.
There, he found out that two had been seen on Cuba.
He phoned me the following morning telling me we had an order for an ExL. for ICBP.
Later we found out it was given to President Fidel Castro.

Gorgeous shot, the colours are stunning. I love the stance you've captured him in, very natural for a woodpecker and yet a very different way to portray a bird, well done.
