Description This isn't a fan character or Jack's sister or something, lol! It's what Sally looked like in some of Tim Burton's original sketches. I couldn't find any online but there's a small picture of it on the booklet inside my tNBC DVD, fyi.
Just thought it would be fun to draw her, and that other Burton fans might find it interesting that Sally once looked like that. I still prefer ragdoll Sally, of course

Ah, I remember seeing this TNBC book 'The Film, The Art, The Vision.' Sally sure went through some changes. It's interesting to see how a character's design changes over time.

Well this is a very interesting new look! I guess a lot could be said about it. She does admittedly look like she could be his sister, though. They are both uniquely as well as elegantly dressed so I don't know...But honestly I will always prefer the rag-doll Sally because I feel that it added to her character more that that is what she was created as and it makes her and Jack quite the mismatched original pair. It makes it all the more lovable and unique to me so I'll prefer that even though I can admire this art for what it is because like I said it is quite interesting to look at it this way! It's just when I look at this version of Sally I can't see 'Sally' in it. It's not just because she's not a rag-doll here and presented differently but this new take on her seemed to change that fragile tearing-apart-at-the-seams soft and shy side of her original persona. I can't even describe this new persona I'm seeing in this version of Sally because there really are so many opposing aspects but I do admire the new view. It changes her character for me- the way she's clinging to Jack with that perpetual blankness in her face the enraptures any onlooker and how she poses so straight and tall and prim and upright- unlike the unbalanced rag-doll version. And of course how her hair flames around her face in its frazzled manner going in haphazard directions and sort of balances her relaxed-stricken ((?) that doesn't exactly make sense) upright aspect of the rest of her. Just everything about this version of her seems balanced and falling into place and blinding in small doses. Just seeing them standing together in this picture makes my mind draw a blank in the whatever given situation of happenings in that moment compared to Jack standing with the rag-doll version- that version seems to bring out the new and best in each other in balancing each other out in character and my imagination can make any sort of calls into the moment and it moves and it looks and feels complete.

I can't really explain my thoughts right now effectively so I might not be making any sense. It all probably spilled out wrong anyway.
I really like this new view and I can see why Tim changed Sally to what she is today. This is drawn out really well (the pinstripes in both outfits are stunning, I can never accomplish them at all so congrats to you being so awesome at them). I like how the outfits are matching for each individual 'character' in the moment and I admire Jack's contented expression as he looks on thoughtfully to his friend. Their postures say a lot and I like the hands (and hand placements). This piece is rather enjoyable for my eyes so thank you for taking the time to re-create some of Tim's original concept sketches. Bravo indeed on this fantastic piece!

Thank you again for another thorough response! Yes, I certainly agree, I prefer ragdoll Sally much more than this version. To me, this is just a female version of Jack, and --as you so correctly pointed out-- is not as interesting as the companionship between Jack and ragdoll Sally. They contrast each other not just in the physical design, but also in their vastly different personalities. I think you are right in saying that they bring out the best in each other, and that they balance each other out. This is probably why Burton chose the second version. It's like they were made for each other, but not in the sense that they are two sides of the same person (does that make sense? I don't know).

And thank you again for noticing the pin-stripes! Those are fun to do, but only if you enjoy meticulous pencil work as I do... Thanks again for your comment!
