Description This piece was made for Spinner'sEnd's 6th Challenge: Severus Snape, Death Eater.

***

I like playing chess and I know the game quite well, but my English is not so good to allow me to explain best what I had in mind when I planned this, so I'll help myself borrowing some sentences and explanations about chess pieces by Wiki. Shame on me, but that's it.

Pawns: "Pawns are unusual in movement and use. Unlike all the other pieces, pawns may not move backwards and the first time each pawn is moved from its initial position, it has the option to advance two squares. Any piece in front of a pawn, friend or foe, blocks its advance. These pieces were used as a metaphor for common men directly in the game, rather than the piece being applied to life's perspective the other way round. Pawn is often taken to mean 'one who is easily manipulated' ore 'one who is sacrificed for a larger purpose'"; even if the last sentence could be applied to Snape as well, on Voldemort's side the pawns could only be Quirrel and Pettigrew, used and sacrificed (Pettigrew stands by Voldemort as it happens sometimes at the end of some games, meaning that pawns can have a great role, in some cases, as Pettigrew was fundamental to Voldemort's rebirth). In purple, because it felt the right colour.

Knight: "The knight can jump over all the other pieces, so it is at its most powerful in closed positions, in contrast to that of a bishop. A knight should always be close to where the action is, it's more powerful if placed near the centre of the board -A knight on the rim, is grim-. Knight are usually brought into play slightly sooner than the bishops and much sooner than the rooks and the queen".
Lucius Malfoy, of course. With his ties and connections and sooo active 'social' life. Trials, rumors, politics, Death Eater missions, Malfoy Manor in DH: he's always in the middle of the action, even if not always as a fighter. In distinguished royal blue. For the outfit: you know, he likes to show off...

Bishop: "The bishop has no restrictions in distance for each move, but is limited to diagonal movement: a bishop always remains on either the white or black squares; approximately equal in strenght to knights; less experienced players tend to underrate the bishop, more experienced players understand its power, but a more sophisticated understanding is required. Bishops generally gain in relative strenght towards the end of the game, as more pieces are captured and more open lines are available for them to operate: when the board is empty, a bishop can influence both wings simultaneously. A player possessing a pair of bishops has a strategic weapon in the form of a long-term threat". Oh well, IT IS Snape, in his shattered, billowing green robes, point.

Rook and Castling: "Rooks are stronger than bishops or knights, a rook is a very powerful piece to deliver a checkmate. In the opening, the rooks are undefended by other pieces. Castling is an important goal in the early part of a game, because it serves two valuable purposes: it moves the king into a safer position away from the center of the board, and it moves the rook to a more active position in the center of the board (it is even possible to checkmate with castling)." Bellatrix Black is the obvious choice when it comes to the rook, because of her attitude towards Voldemort. In bright red, of course. The green bubble is actually the Castling.

King: "It is the most important piece, although it is one of the weakest pieces in the game, until the endgame. In the opening and middlegame, the king will rarely play an active role in the development of an offensive or defensive position; in the endgame, however, the king emerges. As it cannot be captured or exchanged, its value could be considered infinite.". Voldemort in all his features: from the parasite we met in PS, to the embryo in GoF to the Dark Lord in DH.

Queen: "The most powerful piece on the board and so, the most valuable. Well before the queen's power expanded, it was being romantically described as essential to the king's survival, so that when the queen was lost, there was nothing more of value on the board." Nagini. Is there anything that snake can't do? And of course, there was that Horcrux thing that felt fitting...

So, those are my Black pieces.
(My choices for the White ones, for the same reasons, would be: Kingsley Shacklebot as a Knight, Remus Lupin and Arthur Weasley as the two Bishops, Mad-Eye Moody as the Rook, Harry as the King and Dumbledore as the Queen. ...no idea for Pawns except Snape...)

You're the first one to use the word "sweet" to describe this picture, I think... Thank you.

Thank you very much! This was very funny to make up...
Actually, I'm still thinking about fixing it, cleaning it, and at the same time I would like to give each piece some space (showing the details on the robes, for example...)
Unfortunately (or maybe not), I have too many new ideas in my mind right now, and not enough strenght to realize even them, so it will have to wait! Besides, I can't really say I don't like it at all

deeply intriguing, what an amazing way to put this! the appointment of characters to pieces are really suitable. and Sev's face is hidden, possibly disguising his true intentions?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to EccentrcityEstMoi [2011-07-26 09:47:04 +0000 UTC]

Many thanks!
As for Sev's face, I associated the Bishop with the figure of a spy, a double-agent: his intentions are known just to his true Master. The Rook, the Queen and the Knight, though for different reasons, are somehow open in their allegiances and purposes; so their poses are somehow open, clear, proud and solid. The Bishop, on the other hand, is moving, walking away from them with his face hidden, because that's his nature and job.

If I had time, I'll give everyone some space and draw down something like a 'Chess-series'. Indeed, I thought about their robes a lot: I'd like to draw them in detail...
