1st ENVOY'S JOURNAL - LOG 478

Approximately 72 hours after their arrival, unexplained phenomena began unfolding throughout the system. A dark omen appeared in the sky. The sun gradually lost its brightness over the course of 3 hours, until it was but a blood red orb in the sky, and with it bathed the lands in deep scarlet light. What followed soon after was akin to a literal Hell on Earth, as if Pandora's Box was opened and its horrors unleashed upon the world. Global temperatures began dropping, weather patterns became erratic all over the world. Violent lightning storms erupted in many places, knocking out power grids and telecommunication networks.

All manner of creatures of earth, sky, and the sea began behaving in strange ways. Howling of dogs could be heard, some cowered in fear, birds flew helter skelter. In some places, reports of birds falling in great numbers from the sky like black rain, entire streets were littered with their corpses. But more harrowing still, were the behavior of the general populace. Many succumb to mass hysteria, mass suicides took place everywhere, more so among the religiously inclined. Many turned to their faiths, praying to their gods with tears on their eyes and beating their breasts, for they believe the Day of Reckoning has come.

Cults that once operated in the dark have began proclaiming in the open, with many resorting to ritualistic suicides and killing, thinking that their salvation is near. Those who did not believe, in their desperation, began turning to religion, others turn to science and rationality to hopefully divine the unexplainable. Never underestimate the inexorable coping and defense mechanisms of the human mind in order to protect itself in times like this. Sadly though, all these poor souls, the ignorant lot they are, are all very wrong. And perhaps that's for the best. The larger truth of the nature of reality and what truly lies out there is not meant for the fragile minds of the uninitiated.

With the collapse of order all over the world, entire economies grind to a halt, financial centers erupt in chaos as prices go on a free fall all around. Supply chains are disrupted as people succumb to rampant looting. People acted without impunity as they kill and took advantage of each other, either out of desperation, or simply letting out their darkest desires knowing that the end is nigh. What depravities one would only hear in rarity and in obscurity, are now a new normal under the cursed sun.

Transportation networks quickly clogged up and froze. Air traffic control became overwhelmed in many places as airborne flights frantically try to secure emergency landing. All in all, cities and population centers fall into anarchy. Civilization as it is, comes to a complete stand still. I find a sick fascination in how everything quickly escalated into this madness in such a short period of time.

Truth be told, I'm more worried about what people are capable of than the Hierarchy finally making landfall on Earth. It's times like these you see humanity for what it truly is. That what we call as civilization is merely a facade. Take away their basic comforts and watch how quickly they devolve into mindless barbarity. We like to think of ourselves as above animals. We feign dominion over all other creatures of the Earth. In truth, we are no different. Hell, we could do even worse.

Nevertheless, these circumstances will certainly make my efforts of sneaking into Synod HQ far harder. I suppose the HQ is the only place where some semblance of normality still stands. I wouldn't doubt that it is the safest place to be right now in this system. But I am not going there to seek refuge. The High Council hides a very dark secret. They are partly responsible for this unfolding catastrophe.
