Description This is a Hatch/Cross Hatch line project, dealing with mass volume. We were allowed to pick whatever we wanted for our subject. I went online and found various photos and took some photos of my own friend wearing his gas mask. So this will look similar to others, but it should mostly look like: [link] by

I used different styles of cross hatch on different parts, as in, the lines to make his hair are different from the lines that make his gas mask, which are different from his skin, which are different from his jacket, etc...

Overall, I really love this piece. I'm rather happy with him.

Conte pencil on Strathmore, 18x24in. My camera caused this to lose a lot of detail and contrast, but he's quite the eye catcher in person.

Comment before you fav, or I WILL harass you.

I most definitely noticed the various cross-hatching immediately. I've been working on the exact same thing the past two weeks.

Nice work on this one.

Theres a beautiful amount of contrast in this piece. It seems like you used different types of cross hatching and rendering to make this drawing and I think it works really well.

I would love to see more life drawing or photo drawing from you. The more you hone your skills on this type of work, the more your drawings from imagination and memory will benefit.

Well, I've been taking a figure drawing class, I just haven't really bothered to log in or upload anything. I haven't had any desire to, but we'll see how I feel this summer.

This deviation looks oddly familiar... I can't quite place it, though.

You'll get it back eventually Except it was covered in dust and gross stuff, SO MAYBE YOU WON'T.

This is fun. And well done. Some nice cross-hatching happening here, very tight.

Oh, and, yeah, I hate you. Cross-hatch and me are natural enemies. Any friend of an enemy is no friend of mine!

JulieRaven In reply to Currer-Bell [2009-11-23 00:45:56 +0000 UTC]

It was more of a flowy cross hatch, so I wasn't that tight lol more expressive Lucky that cross hatch is a super loose term!

c: It was fun

Well, I suppose it's just that your cross hatch was much tighter than mine. Mine tends to get . . . scribbly. Very scribbly.

GASMASK!!!! *orgasm*

LOVE IT. The fact you can see the face within the mask is a nice touch.

I tried to make sure it looked a little blurry, so that it seemed like there was glass over it, but that was a bit harder without smudging... BUT I like it, too C:

you do a really great job of working with dif. cross hatching styles and putting them all together in a cohesive work; none of the dif. hatchings look scribbly or messy. great job!

JulieRaven In reply to Naiades-song [2009-11-10 16:53:19 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! Thanks! Yeah, the idea was to not be strict with this piece, but still keep it tight. It needed more of a flow to give off the science fiction flare.

I'm really glad I could bring it all together in a cohesive manner <3
