Description "But I want to see some whales!" said the boy.

"Of course we have whales, kid! But be aware, because our whales have legs "

------

This is not meant to be exactly Ambulocetus, or any known species. Just a generic proto-cetacean.

If I remember correctly, ambulocetus completely lost the ability to walk, right?

Are they genetically enginered like in Jurassic Park or were they captured via time travel like in Prehistoric park ?

I have absolutely no idea. I'd rather not think about how this could happen because in all honesty, there's no possible way, so.. I prefer to make pretty pictures and call it fantasy

One question mate, did you used an otter to make this protocetacean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Julio-Lacerda In reply to malevouvenator [2012-03-17 21:00:53 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I used a lot of otter pictures as reference because, at least in my conception, it is the best equivalent in appearance for it among modern animals.

I doubt you'd be able to train a primitive whale though, seeing as the small brain, but then again, some people in the Us have trained kangaroos.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Julio-Lacerda In reply to Boverisuchus [2012-03-15 00:56:26 +0000 UTC]

Depending on the tricks and techniques used, people can train even alligators. It all depends on the point of view, it doesn't really needs to be an 'intelligent' activity per se.

Furthermore, this is more of a joke than anything

Awesome yet again! I think it'd be interesting if you featured something a thalattosuchian - something like the giant Machimosaurus or Dakosaurus.

Julio-Lacerda In reply to RajaHarimau98 [2012-03-14 01:01:14 +0000 UTC]

I'll add those to my list! I'm thinking of different aquatic animals apart from the classic ichthyosaurs, mosasaurs etc. Xiphactinus and Anomalocaris are another two creatures that I have in mind for next images.

RajaHarimau98 In reply to Julio-Lacerda [2012-03-14 01:03:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah, now that would be cool as well. I can kinda imagine the Xiphactinus with a bunch of other fish, a little bit like the great whites at Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Julio-Lacerda In reply to RajaHarimau98 [2012-03-14 01:07:36 +0000 UTC]

What, they have great whites in an aquarium? Wow, I didn't know there were white sharks in captivity, never mind in exhibition!

RajaHarimau98 In reply to Julio-Lacerda [2012-03-14 01:12:40 +0000 UTC]

I think they're only temporarily on exhibition. But yeah, it is pretty extraordinary, wish I could have gone when I went to California.

It's inevitable to think in Ambulocetus. By the way, probably is your most photorealistic image to the date

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Julio-Lacerda In reply to Zimices [2012-03-14 00:53:09 +0000 UTC]

It was mostly based on Ambulocetus, but it also has something of Rodhocetus/Maiacetus as well as more primitive characteristics like the external ears so I didn't want to link it to any known species

And yeah, I'm kinda surprised about the photorealism too. And it is totally painted except for the background, so the animal itself is not a photomanip
