Oh, Very wonderful. I absolutely LOVE this picture. Really, it is the type of picture i would love to take. But enough about my raving. Though, admittedly, i can't do it enough.
The subject of the picture is in a most delightful pose. She is clearly the center of the photo, and sticks out from the background in a most creative way. I immediately get the impression, from the smile on her face, the position of her hands, bare belly, and shorts that she's admiring her stomach.
However, the placement of her hands give the illusion that she is trying to outline something in her stomach. It draws our eyes toward the center of the stomach when there is nothing here. While this does bring attention to the stomach, it also hides it. We are forced to imagine the stomach bulge behind her hands. In a pregnant woman, the stomach IS the center of attention, but it looks more beautiful if we see the full curve. Given the rest of the photo, i would suggest that the hands be moved to the bottom of the stomach, or behind the back. If the hands are underneath the stomach, they could lift the stomach, producing a slightly bigger bulge. If they are behind her, the stomach is completely unobstructed, but still the center of attention.
As it is, our eyes are focused down the front of her stomach, even if the arms are behind her back. This is because she's in a quarter profile, with none of her backside visible. As we look at her face, her gaze leads us down her body, and a thin shadow on the center of her stomach leads us to look directly at her stomach. The way her jeans, and shirt are pulled away from her stomach also accent her baby bulge, as they form a border that leads our eyes around the stomach, making it look even bigger.
As for the background, the fact that it is one make out of two different shades of one color, blue, allow the woman to stand apart from the background. This works because our eyes are not distracted from the subject. the fuzzy background also helps in this manner. Her dark blue jeans and pink top allow her to stand out from the lighter shades. For all intents and purposes, the woman is the subject, and nothing else exists.
Though, there is one issue. There is a royal blue cloth just above the surface of the woman's jeans. We cant' see what it is, and that appears to be rather distracting. It might not have been such an issue if it were the brighter, or even the same color as her dress or possibly even white. instead, we are drawn to this object trying to identify it.

Thanks for the critique, She was trying to make a heart with her hands... which seems to be the thing to do lately, she did it, her friend did it, and my daughter did it a year and a half ago, without prompting from me. The dark blue material is the elastic top part of the maternity pants which she has pulled down to show her belly in full.

Oh, okay. It all makes sense now. I didn't catch the heart right away. and the elastic also makes sense now, since it LOOKED like she was wearing jeans. >.>
