A drawing I did in school...
To practice drawing folds in fabric, we were given pictures of a 3d model in different poses that we then had to dress up. For inspiration, we could draw on a variety of books on historic armor, uniforms and clothing. For the clothing, I picked the pretty ridiculous-looking clothing worn by the combatants in German judicial duels in the 1440s. The goal I set for myself was essentially to make a badass-looking character out of these weird little pajama-warriors.

In his hand, he is holding a so-called Stechschild (thrusting shield, dueling shield). I do not know too much about this type of shield and I couldn’t really find all that much on them online. They are essentially just huge shields with these sort of endpins so that the combatants could hold it with one hand and support its weight on that endpin on the ground to keep the other one free for a wooden mace or a bladed weapon.
In some cases (like in the picture I used for reference), they did not have any additional weapons and were only equipped with a shield. The difference here was that the shields itself had spear-ends and could be used for stabbing.
(and now that i know of the existence of these shields, I will definitely use them in one of my projects)
