Description
After the african big cats went extinct, spotted hyenas became the new apex predators.
Top: Crocuta carnifex, a large hyena that replaced lions. Fast runner.
Bottom: Mountain hyena, comparatively small but very tough and strong, able to bring down much larger prey.
They live on the mountain chain between Africa and Europa.
These are the only two extant species that descend from spotted hyenas, the others went exctinct due to the rise of new predators.
