So one of the interesting lines in the GS Beta discoveries was this weird collection- lil' water-type fishy with a curled antenna thing (with the placeholder name Manboo1, also called sunmola1?), evolving into a water/steel pokemon that was quite literally half-shark, half-anchor (Ikari, with its glorious translation 'Anchorage'), which then evolved into a water/steel... gulper eel? also with an antenna (Grotess.)

There isn't that much cohesion between the three.

Seems like the first stage may have ended up as a basis for chinchou and perhaps carvanha, the second probably went on to be sharpedo in gen3 (who is... literally just half-a-shark), and the third has a strong resemblance to huntail, also of gen3.

Anyhow, we said to ourself "I wanna re-imagine this line" and did exactly that.

Made stage one look a little bit more like an anchor, maybe.

Stage two is now a whole shark, who also happens to be an anchor, rather than being half-a-shark that's also half-anchor.

Stage 3 however, is where things got fun. We had two prototype/prelim designs, and we ended up with this guy, who is kinda a goblin shark, kinda a basking shark, kinda a gulper eel, and kinda an anchor. That Mouth can open Reeeeaaaal Wide. The white tummy is as the gulper. It, too, gets Real Big. Made it look like it should have the steel type. I have no idea what the sticky-uppy things on the original's tail were meant to be but they're... spikes? fins? with bioluminescent tips (maybe a little akin to the actual gulper eel's tail)

We like the idea that they're used by ports to guide ships, and like eating metal.

Anchorage isn't angry, it's just going through a sullen rebellious teen phase.

The base drawings/lines are all pencil, with mostly flat colour- the colouring sure was a thing though, because our wacom is Dead for some reason, and using a mouse to colour is Hard.

We have been having a great time drawing/re-imagining these gs beta pokemon.

Don't own pokemon, but the variations on these designs are ours. This grotess is just. ours, I'd like to say, considering how different it is from the original design.
