The night was awash with the pale light of a full moon, the clouds that skirted the horizon made silver-rimmed mountains in the distance. The fortress had stood on its hill for a thousand years, crewed by immortal sentries. They had ruled over this land for millennia, enslaving its primitive human inhabitants and fighting minor skirmishes against the backward empire to their north. So had it been for hundreds of years, and they knew they had nothing to fear from them.

Sure there had been reports of a few losses on the border, but there was no cause for concern. What had it been, 70 years since their last war? That's no time at all! It would be the same as it always was: A quick victory, more slaves and a great many dead men.

The sentries on the walls first suspected something was amiss when the distant sound of the thunderstorm they were watching began creeping closer, though clouds remained across the mountains. When they saw what seemed like one of the mountains was moving however, they really kicked into gear. How was this possible?! They alone held the secrets of deepest magic! Their mastery was unparalleled! Yet when she reached their walls, it was all for naught...

Their complacency and cruelty were their undoing, and now a reckoning was in order, a reckoning that strode through their bastion as easily as a field of wheat.
