I've got nothing better to do so I've decided to participate in this year's Inktober again! The ninth prompt being "Pressure".
Here we see a couple of snailfish. The Mariana snailfish and the still-undescribed "ethereal snailfish". They may not seem special at all, but they have an extreme home. These two live near right at the bottom of the Mariana Trench which is up to 10,984 meters at it's absolute deepest. The Mariana snailfish being found at 7966m down and the "ethereal snailfish" spotted at 8178m down. At these depths, pressure can reach over 1086 bars which is roughly the equivelent of 100 elephants standing on your head. To survive down at this depth, these snailfish have several weird adaptations including transparent skin with no color, certain organs are much larger, the muscles are thin and weak, the bones are frail, it cannot see despite having eyes and having multiple adaptations to it's very molecules to help deal with this crushing pressure. Down below, these are the apex predators, despite their flabby and soft physiology.
I hope to see this through to the end so I hope you enjoy this.
