Description I've found that more than test fer how long it'll take me to do comic panels, these could be great little things fer helpin' me learn composition an' stuff. I can't really decide if I like this one er not, I think there's some funkiness happening in both Twilight an' Trixie, er maybe it's somethin' relative between 'em.

Anyhow, I think I needa break from these, think I'm gonna spend the rest of the night, maybe tomorrow too, just doin' some sketch-experiment kinda stuff.

Lemme know what'cha think!

As far as focus goes it is spot on! We can clearly see Twilight as the focus, she stands out without going too far, and Trixie is in the foreground but doesn't steal the spotlight without being too dark.
Another commenter mentioned the lighting. Maybe Trixie should have had some more moonlight on her, unless she's in shadow. You can still have a highlight without it's values going too far, and colour is relative, so you can pick a highlight colour that doesn't attract too much attention, like a slight paler, colder purple maybe.
Overall though, it's clear you learned from your last one about composition!

Yay! Hahah. I learned in no small part thanks to you an' yer magic links. I really appreciate the input you've been givin' me. An' turns out composition is way more fun than I thought it would be for some reason, hahah.

It's so inexperienced of me to say, but I like it when I make choices and have intent in a piece and they work. Makes the whole piece feel better to me, an' I'm sure it looks better to others, too.

no problem, I'm glad the things I've learned are helpful!
And composition is definitely fun!

I totally understand. I think it's why we get so frustrated when we can't get the image in our heads onto paper, but when we do get it right, it feels like such an achievement. And it does look better.

Can't wait to see a full comic (or just a page or just a strip) in this style. Very smooth and crisp.

By Celestia you've given me a great idea! I'll do a comic strip!..

Nooow I just gotta think of an idea for the comic strip. Hahah. Maybe I'll come up with somethin' in the next few days.

Hahah, oh goodness, that song was instant nostalgia fer me.

An' my bet's on Twi', if they're there fer a fight. I'm hopin' Trixie stopped by the library for a more peaceful reason though. Who knows? XD

I think the composition is good, the detail level is spread evenly throughout and I also love Twilight's face here. On the other hand the lighting is inconsistent - Trixie's entirely in shadow while the corresponding side of Twilight is highlighted.

Yeeeah, I know. I tried ta bring her values down to emphasize the focus on Twilight, I don't think it works that well. Still figurin' out depth, haha.

Oh oh, try fixing the lighting on Trixie, then add a little depth-of-field blur. It looks good in my head anyway.

I'll be honest, I don't really like the idea of filters an' stuff like depth-of-field. Call me traditional, but I don't like anything I can't make myself do with just the brush tool, hahah. I'unno, maybe I'll explore stuff like that some day. XD

Yeah, I can understand.
I've seen some paintings where the DOF was painted in, though. I suppose it works on the same principal as blending colours for shading. You'd want Trixie on a separate layer so that when you feather the edges, the background stays crisp. I'm still very new to digital painting, so don't take my word for it.

Hahah, naw, I getcha. I mean, technically, if someone were good enough, they could paint in everything a filter did through computer magic. Even then though, dunno if I like the look of that. Hah, I'm still new too, I don't even know what I want from a "style" yet, so, I'll just keep makin' mistakes 'til I figure it out, hahah.

Hafunui In reply to JustDayside [2012-06-10 17:07:53 +0000 UTC]

The whole point of DOF was to draw a certain amount of attention away from the foreground (in this case anyway). But that could also be done in other ways too, like the use of space and leading lines and such. It's just that I hadn't noticed Trixie in there until I read the comments

No that I look at it, you've directed focus just fine with the composition alone, so if you were to fix the lighting on Trixie it should still look great.

Yeah, I think adding some lighting to Trixie'd be my easiest/ideal solution... I'll just kinda store that in my head though, already moved on from this painting, hahah. I like a clean start more than I do goin' back an' tinkerin' with things 'til they're perfect.
