Description So recently I asked a co-worker to crit my shit. He suggested I draw characters from different angles since I trapped myself in the eye level shot (for concept purposes). Unknowingly I have refined my camera angles, where as before I used to play with them more. That night I went home and busted this out. I slapped some quick paints on, but haven't gone back to it yet. I don't know, I am kind of fond of that roughness.

Great angle, and I love the colors you used.
I gotta try this angle now xD.
Also I like peeking at some of the sketch work, it helps me see kind of behind the scenes. Like the angle line on the bottom for example, now I can try that myself! Thanks for inspiring

Various fashion I see from people walking around, magazines, or just random shapes and designs I come up with in my head. This one was from the dome.

Dude, I was at Lotteria near my job, and this girl walked in with a biker helmet with a huge pink star on the side! I was like "JUSTIN, WHERE YOU AT!?"

very thoughtful. I am not sure if I will take this further, I am thinking that it gets across what I wanted and just tried out a different approach to my sketches.

Thanks man! Yea, getting outside your comfort zone is def a good thing, you can learn and exercise your techniques. Getting loose is nice, since at work its all polish.

have to agree here...which does truly hurt considering that im still doodling around in my own comfort zone...
all polish? is it so annoying after a while? where did you end up working actually?
i thought about getting into 2d business seriously, so im quiet curious and such

cheers

justinwongart In reply to dasAdam [2010-02-23 17:34:56 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I got into the mode where I got really unsatisfied with my rough strokes, and wanted to blend everything...needless to say, that is a trap, and probably a sign of insecurity in my work. You can get caught up rendering, and which takes time, and made me lose a lot of drive on my pieces. Things maybe smooth, but that doesn't beat well thought out effective brush strokes. I am currently trying to change things around, this piece is not a good example of that, and wayyyyy too rough to be considered finished, but for sketchy-sake it works. I am working as a 3D artist @ Carbine Studios NC Soft. So the 2D I do get my hands in is texture work :/ If you are going after a 2D position, hit it...and hit it hard man!! *battle cry*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dasAdam In reply to justinwongart [2010-02-23 20:52:08 +0000 UTC]

loss of drive. kinda know that feeling too... ill be coutious thanks for the insight

for a sketch it really works perfect. i would need way more time to get a result like this

oh and its funny that you are working as a texture artist. would have sworn its a character designer career you are seeking/having. or you gonna change jobs some day? is the texturing any fun in the long term? sorry for asking... its just that i work as a 3d artist as well. in a small company so i do all texture jobs, hardsurface modeling and moodpaintings, storyboards and such when it comes to the pitching.
so when im really about to find my way into a bigger company i would apply for texture artist as well. question is: is it that much fun or do you get bored just sticking to texturing tasks? is it maybe more colorful to work for a game company than a big production company? im really keen on leaving the country and getting a job somehwere. im just unsure if i should just try to apply for concept artist or stick to the 3d for a while and get better in drawing and painting in the meanwhile.

ah sorry to bother you with my personal mind salad ^^
