Description Tease me, please?
Commission Edition - Dejah Thoris. this is an example of my $80 thighs up budget commissions.
rough drawing, next up final pencils

one question I get asked a lot is how i'm able to work so clean. there's a handful of answers to that. First I do a ton of work not on the final art board. I'm neurotic that way in that i want a super clean board.

i hate doing guess work on the page if i can help it, so i do thumbnails to achieve the best possible version of my idea, then i take that to the computer and massage it, increase the size, make sure proportions are mostly correct, i'll draw into the layout on the computer etc etc(it's a jumbled mess, and if i leave it alone for too long sometimes i forget what all is what)

next i print out the layout, full size, and put it on my light-box to transfer onto the final board. PRO-TIP: this is usually where people loss control of their drawing - light-box to page - in that they mechanically trace their drawing onto the page losing the energy and organic qualities of just throwing lines on the paper. To combat this I do three things.
1. i turn on my desk lamp so it shines down onto the light-box making the layout drawing visible but harder to see, which then forces me to still actually have to draw the piece on the page, not just trace it. the layout acts as a basic guide
2. i extend the lead out of the lead holder to also prevent me from pressing done too hard - IE so i'm unable to do any tight line work - which combined with...
3. i hold the lead holder pretty close to the opposite end of the lead to prevent me from doing any tight line work. Using the layout as a guide i sketch it onto the board, fast, lightly and loose which allows me to keep the board very clean and the organic energy of the piece.

the whole transfer process takes maybe 10-20 minutes depending on the complexity of the drawing.

once the transfer is done i'll go back through and do more sketching and roughing in, building line weights, the forms of the hair, add more stuff etc etc to get it where i really want it. i'll spend maybe another hour or 2 doing this.

for me, everything up to this point is 90% of the work.

Got questions? throw em at me
