Description " "I foresee a generation of elaborately tattooed homeless in the future," says Hata from Koenji's Inkrat studio, only half jokingly. "It's hard to get bank loans and rental contracts with visible tattoos. Things haven't changed much."
From personal experience, while tattoos get positive attention overseas, showing ink outside of Osaka, and Tokyo's Koenji, Harajuku and Shimokitazawa neighborhoods is not only looked upon unfavorably, it is often seen as offensive.
"I don't walk around town showing my tattoos off with short sleeves," says Tattoo Lifestyle magazine's ex-editor Maki Furukawa. "People get scared. Still, I want people to see them in a more positive light."
For female artists such as Ryoki of the Al Haut studio in Osaka, informing clients of potential consequences is essential to her job. For many heavily tattooed people, wearing stifling clothing in the punishing summer heat is de rigueur, as commuters will — no exaggeration — give them quizzical or horrified stares on public transport. And then there's the usual prohibition from hot springs, golf courses and gyms, which reflects the fact that mainstream social attitudes concerning tattooing are not in line with its popularity among certain groups.
"Japanese youth need to age, and their kids and grandkids need to get tattooed," says Matt Shamah, an American artist who is in Japan tattooing perhaps more than any other foreigner. "That's what it takes for social boundaries to change."

Manami Okazaki writes about Japanese tattoo trends for a number of magazines and recently published the book "Tattoo in Japan" (Edition Reuss, 2008, 320 pp.) with photography from local shooters Geoff Johnson, Martin Hladik, John Harte and Tommy Oshima.

" ☆ i am walking out the studio right now , the Hoshiro's ink studio .
this is my new design for my new ink .
i am half way there 'cause today we've finished the lines .
more two sessions to get the shades and colors .
about four hours or so to get it done : )

pretty much happy because as we changed a little bit the sakura petals design ,
it came much more unique than it is in this picture .
As you can see , i am very much obsess with getting my body well ink and done.
I do hope i'll have at least one more until the hanami next season .
but i've gotta save some cash first .
idk how it started but ,it doesn't seems like it will go away too soon .
we'll see ! ☆

btw: in there , someone told me that i am the wind in the
four element based on my date of birth and "decanato" . i have no idea where this word came from .
pretty cool cause you know .. this!!! . and i also have a Phoenix on my back .
So i was kinda wind like-ish anyways . . .

also . it seems that Air have influence on any element .
which it doesn't happen with the fire , earth or water elements .
i have no idea what does that means either but , so she said ☆ .

Tattoos seem to be the art that people spend their money on nowadays, more and more people get them and it is more uncommon for someone NOT to have one, yet getting a job is still incredibly hard if you do have tattoos.

this so much!

It becomes almost an addiction getting your own ink, one can never be enough.... creating something so unique and personal, a little piece of yourself for all the world to see....

I always find myself walking out of the tattoo studio already planning the next one

the good thing is that the water in Japan ,
in the tattoos , they have a very unique way .
i was asked not to show photos or describe them
very specific but , i can say that you can only get one in here .
the artist who draw this is in the top 10 studios in Jp .
i am very excited to finish it
japanese clouds were used to be like that too but,
someone had shown to the world and today they are everywhere .
i will respect the artist wish .

They are amazing - the clouds are amazing too! It's a shame that people get things like that because they think they look cool and don't really understand the special meanings behind them! I think all tattoos should have a special something to the person who got it... it makes no sense to just get one because you think it's cool - I think that's how people come to regret them later in life, they grow up and what they like changes, but if they get one that has a special meaning then it will always be special even in 20 years!

I am excited for you to finish too, good luck

I must admit too that I have once looked down upon tattoos, but seeing the very different artistic forms of tattoos and beauty to it--I've grown to admire tattoos. I do not have one personally yet and I'm not sure about getting one in the future, but I know that I love tattoos I hope that people from all over the world can one day learn that tattoos can be an artistic form of expression too...

tattoos are perceived negatively all over the world, though in Japan it might be even worse because of negative connotation with yakuza. Basically even if people know that your tattoos have nothing to do with criminal underworld, they still, probably, think that you make your decisions recklessly and you're untrustworthy. I'm curently working on my master's degree work about attitudes toward women with visible tattoos in hiring process, can't wait for the outcome.

nice design i'm getting new tattoo on 21st.

It looks lovely.

I have long considered a tattoo. I know what I want: A portrait of the Ofuna Kannon. Where it will go I haven't decided.

The problem is, as you say, tattoos are viewed with suspicion, especially in baths and hot springs. Although I am older and female, I love visiting hot springs and don't want any trouble.

at least you live in US .
you can get into hot springs , here i can't anymore .

Diinzumo In reply to jyoujo [2011-11-15 06:00:34 +0000 UTC]

I have never found a hot spring in the US that was as much fun to visit as those in Japan.

i can't even imagine how it's like a hot spring
outside Japan : )

Diinzumo In reply to jyoujo [2011-11-17 03:09:10 +0000 UTC]

I've been to a natural hot spring in Yosemite National Park, and I've been to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, which has a large swimming pool fed by hot springs as well as hot spring baths. Bathing suits were worn to both places, and it's not as relaxing as going to an onsen.
