I got this mask from arachnid15 and Katerina423 with the hopes that it passes hands from artist to artist. Ill tell ya what, this mask is so damn creepy but I am trying to find something in it that is a bit different. I encourage all of you to go check out what Steven did with it! I hope to continue taking shots of this until I get exactly what I want out of it but I think this is a good start. This is my attempt at retaining my style portrait without makeup
I am having a hard time posting this because I am editing it on a monitor that is WAY out of calibration so I hope it isnt too dark or contrasty (or flat for that matter).

WOW - like an ancient Greek actor - the frozen facial expression of the mask couples with your elegant hand gesture and framing - produce a wonderfully emotive piece - that ( as obvious from all the responses) conveys lots of messages to the viewer. Where is the mask now?

Wow, great start! I'm curious now to see how else you will use the mask! That disembodied-looking hand looks like it's almost caressing your throat rather than choking it and combined with the featureless mask, the image looks rather creepy to me.
And I agree, Steven's image is amazing and scary, especially with his eye so wide open and his dramatic pose.

I always thought it was a bit sad and depressing rather than scary, mainly due to the eye closed and the gentle hand rather than an open eye and tense hand. Im curious what aspects make it creepy? (though the mask itself is very hard not to think of as creepy

Really? It doesn't come off as sad and depressing to me. Your body language shows something different. You seem very sure of yourself because of the way you hold your body - it's stretched out but there isn't too much tension and your hand position looks very deliberately placed there and is not limp or even that relaxed at all.
Yes, I find the mask is creepy because it is so featureless, but with your eyes closed and your lips in it's natural resting position, we cannot even see any emotion in the parts of your face that we can actually see. On top of that, one of the eye holes is completely dark, like a well of darkness, and we cannot see your eye at all there. What makes the image even creepier than the lack of emotion in the face is that the hand seems to be the only thing showing some emotion in the way that it seems to caress your throat moving upwards in a loving and possessive manner (at least that's how it looks to me). And I'm thinking that if that hand gets angry, it'll change that caress and just choke you!

This tells one hell of a story, Jason. I am a huge fan of both ^arachnid15 and ^Katerina423 , but I must say this image was more grim than the picture you link to in your Author's Comments. That's just my personal opinion, though.
I think it's the higher contrast in this shot and your hand on your neck that strikes me so much (not to mention the extra darkness that blots out your left eye). Awesome use of the mask, bro.

I dont think it conveys the intense fear that Steven's shot does though. It is no less intense, but the creepy and horrorish vibe of Steven's shot I dont think pulls through though. I think you are right in thinking it is vastly more grim! I think Steven's has a very "Phantom of the Opera" feel and his eyes penetrate you further the more you look at it...fear.
This is my opinion of course but Im glad you appreciate this picture! I have been trying to shoot this mask for awhile now and I really wanted to do something that conveys a different emotion than Steven did with his, yet equally engaging. I think this is a start but I have a lot of work to do with this prop for sure before it is passed on to another artist.

You're right about Steven's piercing eye. He made sure it was wide open.
Take all the time you think you need. Good art should never be rushed.
The one huge factor about your shot that I failed to mention was its high angle, as if we're seeing through the eyes of whoever or whatever is oppressing you. That also augments its grimness.
