It's no surprise, altho I praise originality and creativity in any work of fiction, I'm such a sucker for over-used but working (and timeless) tropes and cliches. One of my favourites is "constantly-bickering-couples-who-would-actually-die-for-each-other" thing. It's kinda old and predictable already but there's something very amusing about seeing these two characters trying to out-sarcasm each other/shout down but in times of real danger they stand together, working as a team, or offering their shoulder to cry on in distress. Or, when no one notices, being just huge dorks around each other, talking passionately about stuff they like and so on. And just as art greatly reflects my life and preferences, I often use these cheesy tropes in my stories myself. Eva and Rogan are that kind of friends who are very different and they feel it themselves: constantly at the state of war with each other because of their differences. She is a happy ball of sunshine and flowers who finds positive things in every situation and loves communicating with all kinds of people; he is broody and moody tall emo-goth who hates socializing and throws wit around like confetti. Their opinions and views rarely ever cross and they are both too stubborn to agree with each other. But you still won't find two people with stronger bond: they attain harmony in really shaky situations when decision has to be made quickly, and in quieter times find connection through sharing their feelings and talking everything out. Eva helps Rogan with his inner struggle of opening up and trusting anyone via encouraging him to participate in crowdy and people-y events, Rogan grounds Eva down a bit, teaching her to see darker sides of life, as she had grown up in shiftless aristocracy, and possesively protecting her from any dangers. They sure share a genuine bond that started out slippy but grew stronger and more faithful with each day.
