Description i wished i had better words for the title of this artwork... i should have... because i could at least use tribal words to title this artwork... but anyhow...
the story of this design is that i have a few co-workers who are bidayuh and likes tattoo/art in general... so during chinese new year, we had a company party and we had a few drinks together and talked about doing arts. they asked me about how i do arts, and about basic starters' tips on arts.... and after a couple rounds of beer, one of them told me to design a tattoo for him! he told me to draw a wild boar anthro, holding a big knife with a swinging post. i thought he was drunk. but he told me that he was serious...
so, i went on to design this tattoo. my co-worker is bidayuh, with quite some tattoo on himself already. he has a carp on his arm, and raijin on this chest... when drawing his idea, i thought that bidayuh / sarawak is actually quite famous with our traditional tribal tattoos. and that boar hunting is actually quite known here... so, i decided to that it would make sense that i put in lots of bidayuh elements to it. so, i made this boar warrior dressed in almost traditional bidayuh warrior clothes, and having tribal patterns on different part of the design... well, it's a way to promote my country to the dA world too... 2014 is visit malaysia year. there are events all over the country. and if you are a tattoo/music/tribal fan, you should not miss the rain forest world music festival on july this year.
for those who do not with to google about everything, malaysia is the name of my country. sarawak is a state in malaysia. bidayuh is one of the native tribes/race in the state.
that's all. thank you.

This looks awesome! I myself treat boars as my spirit animals, I've been thinking about boar tatoo for quite a while, too. I must confess that I didn't even think about this being indonesian thing. It looks to me like sort of celtic (hence the spirals) motive, this would very well fit into some fantasy setting, high or low. Great work!

thank you very much for the compliment and comment
i do agree that there looks like somewhat celtic in it... the spirals are actually bidayuh. but native arts here are less 3-D, so when it's designed into a character, maybe it made it looks like celtic as they have more 3D elements added to them with designers nowadays...
would you like a boar tattoo design of your own? i can design one for you depending on your culture for a low price haha...

Nah. I gave up on it - maybe in future, but I wanted a boar on my right shoulder and anvil on the other, but sadly, tattoos in my opinion became a bit too common for my taste and lost it's meaning for the most part. That, and also, I've got eczema on parts of my shoulders, though I mostly got rid of it, it wouldn't do good, I am sure. Sadly. But thank you for your offer.

I hope so. Thing is, I can't currently forge anything new, as I don't have access to smithy now. But I have loads of ideas for new stuff. Pendants, leather crafts, armour, axes, knives, "hunting" "swords" (Basicaly oversized singleedged knives)... I wonder, does "your culture" have such a thing? In europe, pretty much every culture in europe since iron age had something like that. Germanic saex, celtic falcata, western european falchion, middle-european "tesák/dussack/hunting swords", jatagan in the balkans... But I don't know much of weapons/tools outside of europe, and hefty singleedged blades were always of my interest.

whenever i don't have a tool to make what i'm most used to, i try to use something native to do something crazy. that's why i post a lot of stupid artwork using my cellphone... it's always around, and i can just do whatever when i have a pinch of time. maybe you can play with some leather while you don't have a smithy...

actually, my 'race' is chinese. but malaysia is a multi-cultural country. so we know a little bit of everything...
since you mentioned,  googled a bit on native malaysians' weapons... but some of them are a bit primitive because native cultures here are not as well developed as the more known cultures... still, i think a few of the might be of interest for you...

this is the malay keris. it's the weapon that symbols the royals and high positions. but i don't know how they forged to get the shape. sorry. haha... www.google.com.my/search?q=KER…
malays also use bigger weapons... they still do nowadays... lol... www.google.com.sg/search?q=par…
the royal staff might be of interest to you? www.thestar.com.my/~/media/ima…

bidayuh swords: www.google.com.my/search?q=bid…
iban swords : www.google.com.my/search?q=iba…
bidayuh and ibans are very similar cultures. so their items are a bit similar. but you can notice that the ornaments on the weapons and the shapes of the weapons are a bit different
oh, and native bidayuh and ibans like to roost fight. so they make sickles for their roosters to make it more brutal : www.google.com.my/search?q=roo…

Oh! I totally forgot that kris and parang are of malay/indonesian origin! Every time I see kris, I wonder how they are forged and sharpened. Sharpening wavy blade must be tedious work. Also, those swords look quite interesting. I really like some of the scabbards. Kinda strikes me that they do not have any sort of crossguard. Thank you for the info.

You're welcome, erik. If you want to build a keris, you might be able to find something on youtube...
I think the civilizations here did not evolve to crossguards, hence they don't make them. Nowadays, they live quite peacefully. And the parangs are mostly for cutting wood... haha.
