Is it just me, or does anyone else prefer Orochimaru as the ruler of an evil village, bearing no allegiance to any country, and constantly toying with the main heroes, instead of the Orochimaru that's cooked up in caves, doing experiments and being a general recluse?

Couldn't agree more. And Kabuto being the guy who revives the Hokages and tries to help out would make a lot more sense. It would have been perfect if we saw his back story, and then he announces 'I've been looking for a way to find my real identity, now I've finally found it! I am the bridge that connects the past and the present! I will not let the memories of the past fade to nothingness!' That would have been so epic. Cus I did feel sorry for him when Itachi beat him with Izanami

Yes, I hate overpowered villains such as Obito and Madara. I really enjoyed how Kabuto manipulated everyone, he talked through the dead, like a true mastermind.
At first Orochimaru liked to show off, fighting the third Hokage, where everyone can see, trying to defeat Sasuke even when he was weakened and also trying to kill Itachi. While Kabuto remained hidden.
Then Orochimaru lost temporarily, but Kabuto decided to become the new Orochimaru, he tried to fight the Uchiha brothers and lost as well.
When Orochimaru was revived he became more like Kabuto in the beginning, he isn't himself anymore.
It is strange how they exchanged their personalities.

I think Orochimaru is just doing what Sasuke says cus he knows Sasuke can beat him in a fight. And if Orochimaru tries the body take-over again, Sasuke will just repeat himself and make Orochimaru the one that's taken over. Let's just say, if I was brought back, I'd be more wiser to not attack Sasuke recklessly. And it paid off, since he now has the four Hokages to summon as he pleases.
