I was a little afraid to submit this, so I wanted to wait until the contest at PK is over and see what the opinions are, but I clearly couldn't wait any longer. There was this cat character so I was considering some background to it. I realized that cats hunt mice and knew that the pied piper did the same so I somehow wanted to connect those two concepts (I have always wanted to paint the piper). The kids, as well as the cat, wear masks since that's what the whole story is about (also historically). The piper was supposed to get rid of rats but later took the children too. When I was younger the story really creeped me out. The piper was such a mysterious character, partly really scary but on the other hand there was still something attracting to him. Now I consider it one of the best tales ever. Has the right amount of magic, mystery and fear in a pretty solid story.Related content

Man, I never thought about the pied piper connection, I think I maybe have subconsciously though. Your piper certainly captures that essence of that entrancing mystery. I haven't heard the whole story in at least 12 years, completely forgot about the children :S
I like the urban setting, reminds me of tekkonkinkreet.
You've really taken your style a step further with this, the subtle details are really nice, like the stripes on the pipers clothes.

I like the result myself. I think that the piper connection gives it that extra which my technique still lacks, so I hope more people will notice. But as you said, the story is often forgotten once one is older. Thanks for your comment.
