Description

How long has it been since the last Yōkai Parade entry? Too long!

And since it's practically Spooktober now, I figured it would be a good time to resume the march of ghosts, demons, and magical creatures~

So, first up we've got nogitsune! This notorious trickster is why all kitsune get a bad rap for possessing people and playing pranks on people. While good foxes, like zenko and kiko, work dilligently to better themselves and perform good deeds, nogitsune are far less serious.

These wild foxes, sometimes also called yako, are almost indistinguishable from regular foxes, and often use this to their advantage. They are known for transforming into people, particularly beautiful women, to trick people and entertain themselves. That said, even in human form, they are scared of sharp objects, bright light, and dogs, and often reveal their true form by accident when startled by a dog's barking.

Some of nogitsune's favourite snacks include lamp oil, alcohol, and fried tofu, and they will often sneak into people houses to steal those. People who were mean or cruel to nogitsune in the past are likely to get possessed, although these foxes have a keen sense of humour and often will possess people for fun. People seen doing strange things, like licking lamp oil, are said to be possessed by nogitsune.

That said, nogitsune can - and often do - perform good deeds. There are many stories of the fox returning a favour to someone who helped it in the past, and even marrying people in their human form to support a person who showed them kindness. However, you shouldn't really count on nogitsune too much under normal circumstances - they are notoriously unreliable, and will likely forget what they promised to do, and wander off without ever fullfilling their end of the deal
