His face is very difficult to made: the texture of his coat is too hard to reproduce ...He is awesome and his nose so well done
Do you think that I have to use a 7B pencil instead of a 2B for portraits? (I use a 2B pencil but I iron it several times )
I find it hard to darken my drawings , like in this portrait gigi28.deviantart.com/art/inte… , because everything in the right side of the cheek is jet black in the real picture. Also, do you think I transcribed the emotion in her eyes?
I'm always afraid when the phase shading clothes began especially the effect of drapery, and texture, light ...

Thanks for the good trick ,so I have to color slightly in the beginning the skin with an HB and clearly mark the lightest and the darker zones .
For a more photo-realistic effect , do you avoid defining lines for the edges of objects ?
I always see my hand trembling when I draw portraits, it's a bad habit that I have taken with manga sketchs so I use downright a square to avoid optical illusion effects !
Anyway, sorry but I haven't heard of onyx or nero pencils , are they expensive ?
For the record , I draw my first portrait in a basic paper A4 used for printing with a 2B graphite pencil .

If you look closely at photos, you won't see any lines - there are just shadows which might look like lines at some point. If you want to go for photo-realistic portraits, you'd have to avoid hard lines and build up the shades layer by layer. Don't underestimate patience - one of the main keys for photo-realistic drawings.
Derwent Onyx and Cretacolor NERO pencils are a little more expensive than the regular pencils but worth it!
When I started drawing I also used basic paper and a HB pencil - I still believe, that's a good start!

Nicely done! I like how you could feel the eyes between the glasses.
