Description
Winter Hunter is the main female character to the Shapeshifter manga.

She is a shapeshifter, an ancient race of beings who can transform into an animal at will. They can only shift into one animal, and certain families tend to have the same animal. Winter is a cougar shapeshifter. Shapeshifters live in secret due to a secret government organization persecuting them and hunting them throughout history.

Winter's family was killed when she was four years old. Due to the traumatic past, she does not remember any memory past the murder. She was raised by an elderly woman who was a lynx shapeshifter. The old woman was called "Granny" by Winter, but was not related to her in any way. Granny raised Winter alone in the wilderness, teaching her how to hunt and survive. The old woman taught her all she knew about the human way of life, including most subjects taught in schools, and how to dress like a human. However, the old woman failed to teach Winter how to use money and how human relationships worked. Before Granny passed away, she told Winter to go live in the nearest human town where her parents had left a house and live with the humans.

Winter is naive and gentle. She is very friendly and sensitive to those around her and tries her best to blend in. She worries how the humans will react if they ever found out what she was, but she still goes out nightly to hunt in the town outskirts and local parks. She is a little cautious at first with her new friends she makes at the school, not sure how to react to contact with them.

Soon however she learns to trust them and warms up to Grey the most. She is playful when she is happy and has a hard time showing some of this side of her, as she worries her friends will catch on to what she really is. She is a little timid at times, and completely clueless about normal human things, such as dating. She is generally non-violent, however she can be a bit unpredictable after flashbacks of her family's deaths. She can react hastily to remarks made that trigger these flashbacks, but she herself does not understand this anger.

Winter tends to also be impulsive. She does not think before she does things, and sometimes this can lead her to trouble. She is curious about things and often questions things. The gang calls her innocent because she is clueless and naive about things, but she eventually learns from them and begins to feel as though she belongs. She is sensitive to her past and does not like to think about her family. She lives alone in her house and avoids certain rooms and objects in the home, as she tries to protect her own heart from grief. She has a lot of repressed memories and she chooses to not remember some things.
