Laika jolted awake, her soft, tender eyes now wide with fear. She had caused her mate, Zane, to jump awake as well. He gazed down at her with a confused look.

"Laika, what's the matter?" He asked, a slight tilt to his head.

Laika looked down at her paws, not speaking. She didn't want to worry him, "N-Nothing."

"You can tell me anything." Zane leaned his maw down, nudging her cheek with his nose, "If it has you this startled, I'm sure it's important."

The silver-pelted femora looked up at him, "It was just a stupid nightmare." She twined her tail with his as she sat behind him, "Nothing you need to be concerned over."

Zane sighed, "If you say so." He gave her a sly smile, "I'll get it out of you one way or another." He scooted closer and planted a kiss across her cheek.

Laika grinned, rolling her eyes at his flirtation. She couldn't help but be thankful her fur disguised her blush, "You wish." She laughed, turning to him and squinting her eyes.

"Yeah, I do." Zane smirked, "But another time..." He flicked his tail, turning to head to the pack's densite. "We have work to do, omega." He teased, "Now let's get back before anyone catches us together."

"Race ya!" Laika bounded happily past him, sprinting up the hill to the den.

"No fair!" Zane whispered as he arrived seconds behind, "You got a headstart!" He smirked as he stepped towards her.

"You gave me the opportunity." Laika joked, "A good beta must always be prepared." She cooed back, allowing herself to be trapped between him and the side of the den.

"A good beta should also not fall in love with the lowest ranking female in his pack, but here I am..." Zane pressed his nose to her's, "Hopeless..."

"A beta should also be tough, but it seems you've grown soft in the past few months. You're also really preoccupied, another bad trait for a future alpha to have." She gave him a smug grin, eyes glistening, "Guess that makes you a horrible beta..."

Zane flattened his ears, "Those traits leave whenever I can't be around you. I long to be with you whenever I'm away." He gave her a charming smile, "Love is a violent force."

"I guess loving isn't so bad. You have a lot more compassion than our current leader." Laika grinned, "And you're very persistent."

He suddenly coiled his neck around hers, nuzzling her, "I love you..."

Laika seemed surprised at his loving response, but met it with as much passion as he had. She snuggled her face into the fluff of his chest, "I love you, too."

So, ya'll already know Zane and his siblings, but you never met his mate (or former mate), Laika.
