What should I even say about this? You draw the same thing all the time. Gore and emo boys and whatever else gives you sexual gratification. And now you're getting into people beating each other and slicing each other open, and you think it's cool and hot. That's not even art. It doesn't mean anything or make any sort of statement. There's a reason deviantArt is frowned upon, and it's because of shit like this. It's one step above furries.
Yeah, I understand it's what you like, but you don't give yourself any room for growth. You said the last time I saw you that you weren't proud of your art. I completely understand; how can you be proud of a body of work that consists of yaoi and Pokemon fanart? That's not even considered notable in the art community.
I mean, fuck, just draw something DIFFERENT and give yourself a chance to branch out. Do you want to work at Little Caesar's the rest of your life and draw stuff like this or do you actually want a shot at being a real artist? I'm not being very nice, but you need to hear this instead of just reading your goddamn hugbox every day.

Not to really get too involved with this seeing as it's none of my business. But i got accepted to AI, Platt, and Laguna art colleges with my crappy manga style porfolio, seeing as my 1.3 gpa in high school was so shitty and under requirements. xD
And let's face it, if you look at my gallery it's shit compared to your friend irl here.
I refused the schools because i haven't the money for it. But let me say this, art colleges no longer require you to be good at art, if you want the degree all you need is the money. It's kind of sad. :/
But i do want to say that the comment about yaoi and gore was a bit overboard. Gravitation is a huge yaoi, and i can't even get started on the numerious of books that have a blood bath in every scene. oAo;
Well that's all i had to say. Really im not trying to pick fights or have a debate over anything. Just wanted to make a brief...originally was brief reply. xD
And to the artist. I very much found the picture above amusing, i always do little pictures of me beating up my friends, keeps me from doing it in reality. :>

This was pretty tough on her, and I do love her art...but reading this comment and thinking about it...it makes quite a bit of sense. I have been looking at her work for years and in the past couple of years especially I have been getting more and more disappointed. I am surprised you were not responded to by more people to be honest. Congratulations on having the balls to say that though.

But nah, in all seriousness, what's your problem? People have different tastes, and obviously this is one of her interests. I doubt she only likes it because it's "different" and it supposedly makes her cool for liking it: she just likes it to LIKE it. It's her thing. And who are you to say that this ISN'T art? Unless, of course, you invented the word!
Almost everyone would agree that art is supposed to be an expression of oneself through the multiple medias offered to us, and it's impossible to define it as anything but. And the reason dA is frowned upon are the artwhores, dArama, sometimes the furries, porn, and the ridiculous amount of underaged tweens who are complete immature brats. I never once heard people say "Have you heard about that deviantART? It's full of gorefags, so I wouldn't go there!"
And you can tell someone to branch out all you want, but it's completely irrelevant unless the person you're talking to actually WANTS to try out different things. Otherwise you're just trying to force your definition of "art" onto them, because apparently unless they draw something you like, they're not a "real artist."
Oh, and just in case, I'm not a part of any sort of "hugbox." Hugboxes are for people who are clearly dumbass whiny bitches, who need their legion of rabid fangirls to defend them whenever someone even so much as states an opinion other than their own. Normally, I wouldn't have even responded to this, but rather than state your opinion as an opinion, you try to pass it off as fact and it's pissing me off.

I know Annie in real life. I know she tried to go to art college. Anime isn't something to be tremendously proud of. Note the fact that I didn't say her drawing skills or her photoshopping/coloring was bad. Hell, I LOVE the way she colors.
I'm just saying, she needs to diversify and mature her portfolio if she wants to rise above being a minor internet celebrity (and her heyday is long past for that, anyway). I don't really care if she keeps drawing anime, she just needs to do OTHER THINGS as well. She can draw Red cutting up Pikachu and cumming through its head into Gary's ass or whatever she wants, but she should at the very least try to have some sort of substance with her art. It's not a matter of "BAWW I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT", it's a matter of "Does minimum wage sound like a fun life?"
And yes, deviantart functions as a hugbox for her. If you met her IRL, you'd know.

what if she doesn't WANT to pursue art as a career? what if it's just a hobby for her? i mean, i'm sure i don't know her nearly as well as you do. but if she just considers it a hobby, than artistic growth isn't nearly as important. it's still important, but it's not AS important.
if she DOES want to pursue an art career well lmao disregard that i suck dicks etc.

I know you know her in real life. Obviously. And I never said that you thought her art was bad. The way she colors IS, indeed, very pretty.
You DO realize that she can technically continue drawing what she draws and still mature her portfolio, right? She can still draw all the blood and gore and "emo boys" she wants, it's all about presentation. I can think of a number of different ways all of these things can be given a creative flare, but regardless she won't try anything different unless she WANTS to try, and you acting like a dick isn't going to suddenly make her change up the things she draws.
If she wants to get into an art college, or make a living as a professional artist, then she'll diversify when she wants to. You can help by maybe inspiring her. There are a LOT of inspirational aspects of the world, from music to life stories to famous pieces of art over the ages. But acting like her way of art is the worst piece of shit on the planet's not exactly what "tough love" is. Besides, I don't think her choices are SO limited that she can only choose between minimum wage and nothing unless she changes what she draws. \:

When Annie tries, she actually does come up with some pretty good art. But what he's trying to say, and what I think you're missing is, if Annie wants to go to college, get a degree in art, to prevent working minimum wage, then and only then does she need to beef up her portfolio.
You're right in that nobody gives a shit what she draws. She can draw whatever she wants and post it up here. But it's a fact that colleges don't like anime, and they don't like seeing the same thing over and over again. Colleges and people hiring artists aren't interested in that stuff because it just isn't marketable, at all. Yeah, she was in a graphic design class, and she could draw this stuff on the side. But now she's dropped out, and if she's looking to get back in and up her game, she needs to do some serious work. If she presented THIS portfolio to someone, they wouldn't even consider her. And Annie just isn't really the type of person to do that. She always falls back on anime and dA to give herself more support, rather than learning and synthesizing to produce better artwork. And if she chooses to keep pursuing art, then yes, her choices are pretty limited.
And I'm not going to say anything snotty at the end of this in an attempt to be clever, but maybe you could try inspiring her too? Also, dA pretty much is just a hugbox, whether you think of yourself as part of it or not. There are so many tweens on here that look up to and leech off of older, more talented artists on this site, especially "anime" artists, that dA can't be anything except a hugbox. And he isn't really being a dick, he's just telling the truth. I'm sorry it hurts. But it's true of any artist that draws anime. Including me, and you.

I know its not really my place to just jump in here, and im not going to comment on the arguement above because, as an anime artist myself, i understand the fact that anime artists, unless by some fucking miracle get to work on an anime series, pretty much have fuck all chance in the working world of art, in all aspects. What I am going to say is... I have watched her for a while now, i watch her comics on other sites, i read every journal she writes, hell i even favorite some stuff, she is improving and yes, she may need to advance her work but this is deviantart. it IS a hug box. I dont understand why people think putting serious work up on here actually does anything more than get you another k of faves and watchers. Yes theres the dA store adn the prints and all that but, lets face it, not many people actually make money on that (based on a ratio of how many people are on here that actually put prints up)
With deviantart progressing in to the new era of twilight fantards and justin beiber lovers, i cant see how this site, or anyone on it, can gain anything more than a little bit of a confidence boost to send there work off to other people.
I kinda forgot where I was actually going with this due to lack of sleep but... Why not just let her be instead of leaving this HUGE WALL of insults for her to read. Its not like its actually going to help her.

But....there's not really much that can be done. This is a useless argument anyways. :/ Annie will always rely on dA as a hugbox. And she'll always post her weird shit up here, which is fine with me. I get the point that artists can do what they want on the side of their real work and they can post it here and millions of 12 years olds will drool over it. I don't care about that.
If Annie's gonna get shit with her career done, she's gonna get it done regardless of insults and constructive critism.
