That's a checkered garter, if I'm not mistaken.

*nods* It definitely is. We get them and the striped ones out here quite a bit.

We just have the striped ones where I live, some people call them ribbon snakes, but they do fall within the garter family. Most snakes I see here are the particularly venomous ones, a friend of mine has a few that are considered local that he's put under the venomoid procedure so that he doesn't have to go to the hospital were they to bite him.

Ah I see. That's a cool name for them as well. We have a handful of those as well the big one or us is the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. We also have the Copperhead's, Cottonmouth/Water Moccasin and the bad Coral Snakes. I'm sure there are others but I know those are the big ones that I know of off the top of my head.

That's always good that he does if does get bitten.

It is a cool name for them, but apparently there's a lot of misinformation concerning the procedure. It's the law that if you are going to regularly handle a venomous snake, that you put them under the venomoid procedure to have their venom glands removed. We have heard so many claims concerning this procedure, to the point where we've actively worked to tell animal rights activists that their claims are wrong. We've been called animal abusers, we've heard people say that venomoid snakes have their fangs removed, we've had people tell us that we should be in jail for "putting other people's children in danger." We have the snakes in bins next to a table when presenting them, and snake hooks to fish them out of their bins if we want to get them out of their bins. To prove that these snake had their fangs intact, I did grab one and force open her mouth to show that her fangs are very much intact. I know for a fact that she wasn't happy because she's an Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake, and I wouldn't say that she's bad tempered, but snakes aren't exactly known for their intelligence, so what she displays is typical sassy defensive snake behavior.

You've most likely got Western Hognose snakes too, those actually do have a venom, but they're rear fanged snakes (their fangs are further back in their mouths as opposed to snakes like Rattlesnakes and Copperheads), and their venom isn't strong enough to kill a person. They're also easier to look after and keep as pets as opposed to their eastern cousins.

*nods* Ooo that stinks. That seems cruel to remove their fangs especially if you understand the dangers from handling them often since that could be used for anti venom.

Ya it's not their fault for not knowing what to do if there is a threat. I bet she was lovely too. We have Banana/Ball Python's at our store where I work and they do the sassy defensive behavior too.

Ah I see. I think we have some Hognose snakes around here too. That's makes sense.

Unfortunately when we got home we found it dead. I'm guessing a bird might have gotten to it. It was unfortunate.

Ya it was unfortunate. We do. This one was a Checkered Garter Snake and I saw another that was a Striped Garter Snake. We had that one in a hole in our house outside for awhile I think he had eaten something recently and was hiding while it was digesting. But it was always so cute to see his head sticking out of the hole. He was there for so long I gave him a little thing of water since it was so hot outside.

kagura-deadly-beauty In reply to gdpr-42967851 [2018-01-08 18:20:58 +0000 UTC]

We get a lot of deer where I live since don't have a fenced in yard and there have been a few other species of snakes I have seen around here. Of the ones I know the names of at least I have seen a bull snake (it kind of acts like a rattlesnake without the tail raddle), cottonmouth (water moccasin), I have seen a copperhead skin but not the actual snake and I have seen a green garden snake once when I was young.
For other animals I have seen lots of possums, skunks (every now and then), raccoons, bunnies, foxes (on occasion), coyotes (I haven't seen one but I have heard them), roadrunners,  and I can't think of any others off the top of my head. But we definitely have lots of wildlife around here.

Wow! You have some poisonous snakes in your area and many other animals. Are you ever able to get close enough to anything-besides the garter snake that you took a picture of-to photograph?

kagura-deadly-beauty In reply to gdpr-42967851 [2018-01-09 00:17:01 +0000 UTC]

Ya we do indeed. One of the worst is the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake but still love their colors/design just keep your distance. I can't get super close to them minus with my camera zoom. The deer we can get somewhat close to they aren't really afraid of us but we still can't pet them or anything.

These were found in the wild eating the food out of people's hands and they are harmless-provided that you don't bother them. They won't bother you if you don't bother them.

Even though the sign on that particular boardwalk says not to feed the deer or other animals, people do it anyway.

Exactly because then they become dependent on that food. The only thing we give to our deer is water and maybe a little old fruit from time to time. They really like strawberries.

*nods* It gets really hot around here so the water is definitely good since they are probably drinking dirty water so the clean water (when the raccoon's don't wash their hands in it) they get is probably a nice change for them. We get to see when they have fawn's they have them laying around in our yard. I love taking pics of them.

I take pics with phone as well unless I know I'm going somewhere I plan to take pics then I will bring the nice one. I know one thing I'm crossing my fingers for is the supermoon/blue moon/lunar eclipse on the 31st of Jan that it's not cloudy. It's going to be big, pretty and red. I'm so excited what better way to test a new camera than on something like that.

Speaking of strange weather, one time in New York we had an earthquake. I thought I was hallucinating or dreaming it, but my brother and other best friend felt it. The exact moment my friend was watching the whale scene in Pinocchio on YouTube, that's when the earthquake was happening. Lasted for 10 seconds-I was counting.

You never hear about that in New York, because it doesn't happen and I don't think it will ever happen again-but I know quite a few people who remember feeling the earthquake and it was even on the news. This was in 2011 or 2012 or 2013 and in the month of August.

Wow that is surprising. I was looking it up as well and it sounds like New York is due for a major earthquake at some point.

The last big earthquake felt in New York was in 1992, when a 4.7 magnitude quake shook buildings. The biggest earthquake to ever hit New York was a 5.2 temblor on Aug. 10, 1884. It knocked down some chimneys.
Those were just be biggest ones that I guess did more damage and not counting some of the smaller ones.
