Description here's a long overdue tutorial i made on my technique of coloring and shading. the way i usually color makes my art look traditional i've been told, so if anyone would like to know how this is possible, check this out. my favorite part is that this includes no confusing layers...i paint digitally like i paint with traditional mediums, so this should be very easy to follow for any-level of artist.

Thank you for sharing this. Simple, straightforward tuitorials like this is just what I need and I'm sure you've helped a lot of aspiring artists. My problem is that I can't shade. I have no idea as to which areas to highlight and which to darken, which is the biggest reason why I always have to rely on a reference pic when I draw.(that and correct angle of the upper and lower extremities) I know it's a bad habit, but I just can't draw from my head The last time I tried, my boyfriend said it looked like the character had some kind of weird disease. Oh well, I'm no artist anyway, just a girl who really likes to draw.
That's really bold of you to use pink and blue tones to create highlights on an otherwise brown horse and still the result is just so amazing. You're such a gifted artist.

"i'm not an artist...just a girl who likes to draw"..
you certainly ARE an artist! XD that's all it takes...the spirit to draw! you can always build up on that!
and it's no flaw that you have to look at a reference...many artists do because that's what they do best. ^^ if you know your strong area, you can add to it, and the more you draw something with a reference, the better you'll be at it without a reference, and it's always a good idea to shade using a reference, because most of the time shadows without a reference look fake...keep up what you do, it IS art!

Thank you so much for saying so Kimberly. I got a lil bummed after reading that crack down on copyright article where people looked down on and condemned tracing/copying and such saying it wasn't art, it shouldn't be posted here on dA and some even called it downright stealing and it made me feel horrible. I'm against art theft and I'd never take credit in any way for anything I haven't made myself, but I really like fan art and if I see a really cool pic or pose that I just have to draw and the original creators approve such use of their characters then I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I'm so glad not everybody are so narrow minded. At least I know what my strengths are tho (according to me) I'm best at drawing clothing and buildings:S And I like to draw hair. Tho I might be a beter writer. Sorry for ranting, It's just been so long since I've talked to you.

don't worry, i don't think that article should even apply to you...You know your strong points...and how are you supposed to draw without knowing what something looks like first? EVERYONE draws from photos or pictures at some time to get experience, it's the best way to get something right when you aren't sure yet of how to draw it...some do it all the time, and that to me doesn't make them less of an artist. heck, my latest deviation is based entirely on a photo. haha! my teacher used to get perturbed at me for not using references enough! he said i needed more practice at that so i could get better at reality and stuff. ^^ it's good to talk to you again, even if it is a rant! XD sometimes, ranting is good.

That's so good to hear. And yeah, so what if I need a reference, why should that make me any less of an artist! And I don't copy artwork from dA or try to get lots of views as the article implied. I'll try out that tutorial of yours when I have time, but I'd never post the result publicly, I wouldn't even ask you for permission coz it just wouldn't feel right. Tho I may send it to you personally asking for feedback. If that would be OK with you, of course.
