Description Always loved the story of Persephone and the Pomegranate, and for some odd reason it became a painting...
And there are too many small mistakes, I know, I know....and the scan doesn't really help.
But anyway, here's the story for those who haven't heard of it.

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter (goddess of earth) and Zeus. She was an innocent maiden who's mother rejected every man who tried to court her. One day she was picking flowers with Athena, Artemis, and some nymphs (according to one version). Suddenly the earth broke apart and Hades kidnapped Persephone into the Underworld.
The nyphs were changed into Sirens because they didn't try to stop him.
Demeter looked everywhere for her daughter, neglecting the earth for a period of time that we call winter, and when the people of the earth cried out to the gods because of their lack of food, Zeus forced Hades to give Persephone back to Demeter.
Persephone was given back to her mother. However, she had been tricked to eat three pomegrante seeds (different number of seeds in different versions), which forced her to return to him for one season out of the year.
So for four months every year, when it becomes winter, it's said that Persephone returns to Hades, and the earth stops flourishing.

Uh.....enjoy. XD

I love the mystical, enticing quality to this painting. It looks like a horrific but beautiful shadowland to be lost in.

This is an amazing painting!! I always loved this myth too and this picture is a great representation of it!

I haven't seen many pictures of Hades with his armour so this is very cool to see. The little heart is very nice too

An amazing picture and great job with the back story. ^_^

Love Greek Mythology so much better than many of the modern stuff... but people seem to prefer the more recent ones. I wonder why?

Marrying his niece... how Olympian. and also If I'm right in my history, Zeus and Demeter were also Brother and Sister ^_^

Haha, thank you!

I also love Greek Mythology. I had a storybook of Persephone's tale as a kid, and I still got another book about three goddesses.

Zeus did marry his sister, which had confused me when I was younger, but now I know it's just an Olympian thing. XD I think it was Zeus and Hera that were siblings, though (it's been a while, I may be wrong).

Actually they were ALL siblings xD

thats the fucked up bit LOL!

Hades, Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia ^_^

so it was a rather weird family... and I think some of Zeus' children were sired by his grandmother Gaia (she rules!)

I love the greek myths so much ^_^
they're just awesome like lol.

Zeus may have married Hera but both of them had alot of children outside of the marriage to be honest like.

I was always so annoyed at Hades for kidnapping Per. I really disliked that story I thought it was sad for her. Beautiful Picture though. Also did you know that Jews really like pomegranites because the number of seeds inside is the same number of comandments? Just a random fact.

yay! i just said that it was wrong because it reminded me of the word pomegranate... because old greek/roman/old stuff usually has some spellings similar to other things (derivatives?)
