Description
  • one-off Chechen regiment in question (in other words if Hasan Israilov (head of the Chechen insurgency) actually proceeded to actually organize a proper collaboration w/ the Germans instead of Israilov just being a pain in the ass for them by being complicated with them) (p.s he still dies in this AH in combat)
  • consolidated into the Kaukasisch-Mohammedanische Legion formed in January 1942 (and in August 1942 for the Bergkaukasien Legion), the regiment bears the name of outlaw Zelimkhan, who committed several successful heists against banks and trains during the latter stages of the Russian Empire (1905-1913)
  • gear's atypical for the era (except they were issued with the typical mountain boots as they're gebirgsjager) and in some cases for officers, the chokha, khanjali (dagger), fur cap, and the decorative cartridges in lieu of the more common officer's tunic and trousers for the sake of identity (though standing out more.)
  • initially formed and comprised of Chechens recruited by Abwehr operatives as part of Operation Schamil in order to capture the Grozny oil fields, after its failure, the Germans would take as much Chechens as they could with them to occupied Ukraine for training, where it was completed by March 1943 (which also led to Stalin deporting the whole Chechen & Ingush populations the following year). placed onto rear-guard & bandenbekämpfung sorties in which they were rather fierce at, ranging from regular partisan units to the Armia Krajowa (though they weren't present at the Warsaw Uprising)
  • later operating against the Yugoslav partisans at Zadar, they would be sent across the Adriatic alongside with most of the German and local Italian administrative units before its fall in October 1944, spend the rest of the war in Trieste holding out against Tito's partisans and kiwis (most surrendered to the New Zealanders, but would be retained as police forces until the mid-1950s)
  • the unit's legacy would leave a mixed taste to this day: while praised for standing up to the Soviet authorities and fighting for Chechen independence & autonomy, the reception's rather mixed, especially following the rise of Akhmad Kadyrov and his son, Ramzan, their support of Putin and the Kremlin, and the Kadyrovites (responsible for numerous atrocities) in the mid-late 2010s, especially during the Syrian Civil War and the Russo-Ukrainian War (though the Sheikh Mansur and the Dzhokhar Dudayev battalions of the Ukrainian Ground Forces seek to redeem their image)
  • armed with mainly german equipment, though soviet weaponry weren't uncommon considering how some personnel were ex-Red Army or veterans of the various struggles against the Bolsheviks following the October Revolution n such idk
