Description So, now for something completely different...
For the past couple of days I've been playing around with shape design. Just messing around with shapes using the principles of tapering, straight against curve, avoiding parallels and avoiding evenness. As well as manipulating proportions, I was able to generate quite a selection of variations of the classical cartoon body shape, the pear. And these are just a few, I'm sure there are a lot more. I don't really know what anyone else but me would get out of posting this, but I figured it might help someone. I've always found design difficult, and I used to focus more on form and structure than shape, but I've found recently that it's a lot easier thinking, drawing and designing in shape instead, at least at first. You can always work structure back in the next pass.
Anyway, let me know what you think. Do you like me posting this kind of thing or not? Did you find this helpful? Etc.
And like always there more on the way.

Since variation of the pear shape is pretty standard cartoon shape design, and don't take this the wrong way, but I think that says more about you than it does about me.

I find this extremely helpful!
I can definitely apply this to my style

What other tips you got?

I'm glad you found it helpful.
I've got a few more observation/tip kind of things laying about. Need to clean them up a little first.
Got one on relative proportions of the torso. Eye shape design, possibly. Could do one on the importance of tapering shapes, too.
But if there is something in particular you want me to have a crack at, either because you want a different take or are struggling, I could give that a try, if you want. No promises, but I would try.

just stuff with bodies and arms and legs, that's what I think would translate best between your style and mine. But anything can apply to any style so I'll be happy to see all of it!

Well, until I can get some more stuff finished, maybe you should check outΒ JohnK's Cartoon Curriculum and Radhowto's old blog . These two really helped me. Particularly the second one. JohnK can be quite critical and I'm not really a fan of his style of cartoon, but he has some really helpful insights. But Rad's older posts are great for breaking down the body and analysing it in regards to shape, rhythm, structure, gesture and flow.

Thanks. Β
And I can see how it might be useful for chibi. You could either make the head the same height or squash down the proportions of the pear.

I didn't post it for people to use exactly, I mean if you want to use those shapes, great, go for it. It was more about showing just how much variation is possible while attempting to maintain appealing shapes. But I guess, use it however it might help. Or don't, it's up to you.
