It is unknown exactly how Thomas turned up on the Island of Sodor, It is said he originally intended to work on another Railway, but a mix-up in Brighton led to sent to Sodor somewhere in 1915 / 1924, Rather than sent back to the railway where he meant to work, Sir Topham Hatt I chosen to keep him and Thomas helped out building the North Western Railway, After the railway was finish being built, he served as a station pilot who shunted coaches for engines, like Gordon and Henry, He found this job very boring, As a result, he played little jokes on big tender engines, and often dream of wanting to see the world. Around 1924, After encountering a few incidents, which involved pulling a passenger train for Henry without preparations, and taking Edward’s goods train for him, He was later rewarded for his actions for saving a fellow engine named James from a nasty accident, Thomas was given two new two new coaches, Annie and Clarabel and was given the responsibility of running the Ffarquhar Branch Line, where he runs there to this day.

Around 1961, Thomas thought he could go off and run by himself without a driver or fireman, and crashed into a stationmaster’s house, As a result, the accident caused him to get severely damaged and go to the railway works, giving him his flat foot plate he has now today.

In 1990, Thomas was invited by the National Railway Museum in York to represent the North Western Railway in the Great Railway Show, he encountered many incidents and having bad luck during his visit there. After double-heading a rail tour with Green Arrow, And Thomas was made an honorary member of the National Railway Museum and received a commemorative plaque.
