Description The last of the 5 projects for the meme I set up on my LJ...this was the smallest and the most complex; as well as the first one I conceived and last one completed.

The web and the spiders' legs are all sterling silver wire - mostly 20 gauge half-round wire. The outer "ring" of the web is 20 gauge square wire and there is a chain that runs behind the top of the ear to keep the web secured in place. The bodies are glass beads. I was going to use garnets but the beads I had weren't bored correctly for 20 gauge wire.

Thank you! I've gotten a remarkable number of people who feel that way about this one. I can't believe it was done on a bit of a whim.

You're very welcome! I think sometimes the work that garners the best response is that which is done with very little preparation or thought. It's more fun to do those, sort of a cleaning out of the cobwebs in my opinion. (No pun intended... )

gosh! this is a terrific job
I'm sure it looks great... I'm in love with this earings (and that's saying a lot... I'm kind of picky on jewellery )
I don't really like the real things too, but on jewel designs they are quite the charmers
Oh, by the way, how many pierces do have to have to wear this kind of earrings?

Well thank you and thanks for the fav! (Double thank you since you're picky. )

You'd only need one piercing for this one, and really, it could be made with a clip on earring too, though I avoid those because they're generally uncomfortable IMO. The web has a chain on the back that hooks over the top of the ear, so you don't need an additional piercing for it.

That's great because I only have a pierce in each ear

The person I designed it for only had one piercing in ONE ear...and when I finished it, I couldn't remember which ear he'd told me had the piercing, so I was really worried that I'd set it up to fit the right ear and he'd pierced the left. Imagine my relief to find out I'd gotten it right!

Thank you and thanks for the fav! I was really pleased with how well this piece came out, though I have some thoughts on how to improve the web design work in the future. I have some thoughts for additional pieces to do if I ever get motivated.

Considering how many favs I've gotten on this piece and how popular it seems to be, I might have to consider mass producing spider pieces at some point. How ironic for an arachnophobe.

I really should give Deviant more credit for the design on this one ... I told him I wanted to do a spider earring or possibly a web, and he suggested the cuff idea which snowballed into the final product. I'll have to remember to thank him next time I see him, considering the number of compliments I've gotten on this piece, both here and in other forums.

I hate spiders... but that is absolutely gorgeous. I have to admit those little guys are really beautiful. And the web is so perfect! Did you solder the legs on? You had to have... The beads you used are so perfect, they really convey the spider shape well.

kailara In reply to DonaIvanova [2007-03-05 19:22:49 +0000 UTC]

I loathe spiders, but when Erik replied to the meme he used the LJ icon that's the negativized picture of his pet tarantula and it spawned an idea that I just couldn't shake.

Yes, the legs are soldered and so is the web -- I used one longer piece of wire that I put a small --u-- shape into to give me a pocket for the legs, then I set the leg pieces into the pocket with some solder and sealed them up. That way I had a wire for the beads to go on and then the legs sticking out from the sides that I then bent into shape.

The beads were a total accident, but the more I look at it the more I'm ok with them. I had wanted to use a set of garnet beads I have (4mm rounds and some hexagonal flat cut ones) for the body but they just wouldn't slot onto the wire (bad drilling) so I had to improvise. I had the ones I used in my random collection of stuff that I forget I have until I need something for an emergency swap out.

*chuckle* Well now that I know I can do them...

Of course, this is one of the more time consuming projects I've done lately -- probably a good 8-10 hours of work total. In comparison, I started another necklace last night that'll probably be about 2 hours of work total (since I'm not counting the time I wasn't working because I was drooling over hot blonde viper pilots). If you want quantity from me, I think I should aim simpler.

Wow. Fantastic design, though I think my boyfriend would disown me if I stepped out in that - he'd have enough problems with one spider, let alone six!

Is it not heavy?

kailara In reply to talyra [2007-03-05 15:57:42 +0000 UTC]

Heh...I'm a HUGE arachnaphobe myself and was a little worried I'd freak myself out making this one. Fortunately, they're a lot less threatening in wire and beadwork.

It's very light weight - part of why I used half round wire was appearance but a lot of it was to lessen the total weight. I hate stuff that weighs too heavily on my ears or pinches, since then I don't want to wear it for long, which is why I kept this one as light as I could and used a chain behind the ear instead of the more conventional pinch-on piece of wire that often gets used on ear cuffs/decorations.

Really? Wow, I am impressed. My boyfriend doesn't even like the battered little spider brooch on my bag. Mind you, it DOES have a habit of attacking him

I happen to adore spiders, so I think this is wonderful.

Not long after I replied, I was browsing through my image files and nearly jumped out of my skin when I scrolled past a thumbnail of the shot of this that I posted in my scraps...so maybe I spoke too soon about them being non-threatening.

I love your icon by the way!
