Description
This is a picture of Mark Rosewater - currently designer of the card game "Magic: the Gathering" and one of my role models when it comes to game design. I read his column every week and figured it was time for him to get some fan art.I haven't done heavy referenced work the last few weeks, so this was a welcome change for my work routine. It was done in about 10 hours over the last 2 days.
The magic-effect in the hand was particularity fun to make. I really enjoy stuff like this.

I have sent him a mail with this picture, but he didn't react to it. I asked him on tumblr if he has seen it, though, and he said "yes, very nice." - I would have preferred a more elaborative answer, but oh well. The man is busy, I guess :/

Weil das so erschreckend gut und flawless aussieht. Nur der (vom Betrachter aus gesehen) linke Γrmel ist n bisschen verwaschen und der Haaransatz in der Mitte sieht n bissl komisch aus. Sonst ist das doch perfekt. Tolle Hauttextur, das Gesicht sieht aus wie n Foto, klasse! Weiter so. Und zur Abwechslung vielleicht mal n bissl Pixelart?!

Do you intend on sending Mr. Rosewater a copy of this? A link at least? I'm sure he'd be very flattered that you thought of him.
As for MaRo's game designing skills: Oh how the hilarity ensues! Some may dislike his more recent projects, but I rather have enjoyed it all the way. On a far different note, his t-shirt collection was a bit interesting, yes?

I don't play the game any more, so I can't really say how his game design affects the Magic community. But I read all of his articles and find them very insightful and entertaining. Also, you can learn a lot about actual design from them.
The articles about his t-shirts (I think there was even part I and II) was a bit silly, I admit. But hey, the man's gotta fit a column every week. Not everything can ooze of brilliance

You did some seriously fantastic work on the face, it looks photographic until you look really close.
Some constructive criticism, though. The skin tone on the hand looks a little off compared to the face. I'm not sure what Mark Rosewater's hands really look like, but just from what I see here, the skin looks a little to light (and a little too smooth). It's mostly on the left hand, not so much the right.
But all together, it doesn't harm the piece very much. People's eyes will be more pulled towards his face than his hands, and that you have done fantastically.

Most time was spent on the face, the hands were done rather quick. I think you can see that very clearly. Next time, I have to be more patient

yeah, it looks awesome! and I was impressed when I read that you only spent 10 hours on it. that's pretty damn fast! I am working on a portrait right now and I've spent about 10 hours on it already and doesn't even look half as good!

It was 10 hours of very focused work, 5 hours a day with little to no breaks.
But I looked at some of your pictures, and you definitely have this "photographic" quality in some of your pictures, too. Some do look a bit to smooth, you should try different kinds of brushes (I guess you work with Photoshop?).

haha that's the difference between you and me. I work like 3 hours a day but with way too many breaks XD
yeah I use photoshop. do you use it too? I am trying to give some more texture to the skin now and try to get rid of that smoothness. do you use some special brushes or something?

Yes, I use PS, too. Brushes, if used right, can be a very powerful tool - especially if combined with the dodge-tool.
